If not, what tools do you use to balance your checking account, i.e. spreadsheet, online statement, etc.

  1. I absolutely use the check register.  How else to you keep track of your bank balance?  The online bank statement doesn't take into consideration checks (including online billpay), debit card transactions that haven't posted to the bank yet.  Relying on that online statement can get you all sorts of NSF fees.

  2. Of course. It is the only quick and easy way to know how much you have.

  3. Yes, I write a check or two each month, but I do a lot of banking through my debit card, and online.  I write down all of my debit card transactions in the register as though I'd used a check, and I also write down online payments that post for bills or credit cards.  I would never use anything else because it is so portable, it prevents me from overdrafting because I always know how much money I have.
