If I wanted to be an archaeologist, what programs do I take in University, one guy once told me archaeologists are anthrapologists which is why I thought you might have to take that instead.

What is the difference between archaeology and anthrapology? What kind of jobs from anthrapology?

What programs would I take to be an archaeologist?

What are some good Canadian Universities that offer archaeology?

  1. Yes I have studied both. I'm not sure about Canada but in America Archaeology is considered a sub-division of Anthropology. (In Europe I believe they hold it as a different major or field).

Anthropologist gather cultural information from the living by observation and some interaction.

Archaeologist gather the cultural information through the remains found in the sites they dig.

You can work for the government as an anthropologist, if you go into physical you could do forensics for the police or FBI. You can work for a museum, or even for large corporations. You could go into Law or even the entertainment world and advertising with a basic degree in Anthropology.

As far as what programs you should take, I suggest looking into some schools you're interested in attending and seeing how they it set up. Some schools (like mine) has Anthropology and Archaeology grouped together as one major but some schools have Archaeology as a separate major.

If you really want to get into the Anthro/Archa. field you are going to have to go to grad school  or beyond in order to make some real money in the field.

For now you can look into your local museums and see if they have any digs going on that you can participate in. A lot of Natural History museums have Archaeologist on staff that do excavations in the summer and they welcome volunteers.

  2. Both disciplines are related.  If you major in one you should be taking some courses in the other.  All the social sciences, history, geography, sociology, economics, anthropology, and archeology are interrelated.

The university that you select will have certain required general courses for a degree and specific ones for your major and minor.
