Do you study at home? I need motivation tips...?

Hi,

I'm trying to teach myself french at home, but my self discipline is terrible. I make so many excuses, get easily distracted and waste SO much time instead of studying frequently and efficiently.

I feel great when I do a block of work or reading, but I find it hard to get into.

Any tips?

  1. It might be a good idea  to take yourself out of the house to do the studying - go to the library.  Sit down and set yourself work.  Do 2-4 hours and then take a break (if you are fit, some kind of exercise is good)  then go back to it.

Put a note in your local shop/post office asking if there is anyone else in your position who would like to meet and study together and / or to speak French with.

Hire French speaking movies and watch them in the evening instead of watching anything in English.  Even if you use English subtitles ,  it's really good practise to be listening and without realising it you will be learning - that's one lesson done!

It's hard to do this alone, I can empathise!

  2. Write yourself a list of the objectives you want to acheive, specifically for that day or say 4 hours of learning.

    Make yourself acheive them.

When you have acheived that particular list , feel good about what you have done and give yourself an award or merit, it may be something stupid like playing on PS2/3 for an hour , or watching tv. Do the things you would normally do as an award for obtaining those objectives on your list, that way you wont feel so bad about  "the distractions". Follow the procedure throughout the week and hopefully you would have attained your goal......just make sure you acheive and complete the list first.  best of luck and i hope you get what you want......
