  1. It is SOO very easy to replace the use of BOTH plastic and paper bags! I use reusable clothe and various other types of materials - all of which are washable, much stronger than their counterparts and you can put more in them!

Try walking from your car with 4-6 flimsy plastic bags and rip-able paper bags. Forget it! I love my reusable bags (and haven't ripped one yet - no broken eggs or glass!)

For produce I am reusing plastic bags that are 100% recyclable. These can be replaced with easy to clean, reusable mesh bags - but my handful of plastic bags are still in good shape. When I buy in bulk I bring in mason jars for a lot of the liquid items - they are easy to clean, cheap (free if you buy products packaged in them) and when the lids get to dirty (which takes a really long time) you can by a new set of lids for about $1. That's a lot cheaper than having to buy new plastic containers all the time! And safer, glass does not harbor the bacteria that plastic containers do. If you ever have anything mold in a plastic container throw it away! Whereas with a glass container, wash it and reuse many more times!

Another thing about using glass to store your foods is there is no leaching of bisphenol A (BPA), a synthetic hormone that mimics estrogen. Even though there have been recent studies about how the levels are not dangerous to health - I still don't want to purposely but any more contaminants into my body than I am already receiving that I can't do anything about.

Read a great review on the different types of plastics at:

  2. Forget plastic, what is really filling up the landfills is old carpet that is replaced daily from homes and commercial buildings

  3. What you really mean to "ban" is the one time use, disposable plastic shopping bags at the grocery stores. In fact, what needs to change is the "disposable culture" or "throwaway culture". Our generation and the generations before us have been "encouraged" to move to the "disposable culture" - Convenience they say.

Can you imagine how many trees one can save if one reuse the same plastic-made bag for a few years (I am not talking about the one you get from grocery stores) instead of using "recycle paper bags" whenever grocery shopping?

  4. Yes. Recycle, recycle, go Green!

  5. The answer is to use BIO degradable bags certified, not like the bags used in Brisbane that turned out to be regular plastic.

Recycled paper is a slightly better option but its Water footprint is GIGANTIC

  6. Honestly it would depend on the terms of the ban. China just banned what would be our grocery/Walmart bag.....but for a nominal fee you can buy basically the same thing made from a thicker plastic.  I'm imagining the fee won't matter, will just become the regular cost of doing business, and people will just toss those too. Now you're looking at more plastic production and waste, not less. Yeah...not so smart.

  7. Yes, there's WAY too much plastic in our world! No, it's not better, for the same reason.

  8. I absolutely support it. But I am not in favor of using the paper bags either. Buy some eco-friendly re-usable bags that you can take with you grocery shopping. They have a much larger capacity than the standard plastic and paper bags and can be washed and reused for years. Plus no more plastic bas at the landfill. Think about how many plastic bags you go home with every time you grocery shop. Now think of all those bags clogging the landfills and our streets..... ICKY..... Be the change you want to see in the world!!!!

  9. Yes. Plastic Bags should have never been invented in the first place. We should take steps to remove them from our society ASAP.

Check out what Ireland is doing...they banned plastic bags from their country 6 years ago and have already saved 8,000,000 liters of oil.

  10. If they are not banned we should at minimum  charge for people who want to continue to use them. In Europe it costs 10 cents (10 years ago) per plastic bag. The real answer to this delimma is to use canvas bags.  I'm sure if Americans were charged up to 25 cents/bag they would remember to bring their canvas bags. It's really not that hard to do.

  11. 100% YES, plastic bags are a huge pollution problem. They are light weight so they can't carry much. I already banned plastic bags from my shopping. I have a variety of reusable bags that I've been aquiring over the years. I think if stores no longer give bags away free more people will reuse bags, that will eliminate both plastic and paper.

  12. Absolutely yes!  I stopped using plastic bags and went to reusable bags and haven't looked back.
