You should have been given a 'valet' key when you got your car. It will let you open the front door, but not the trunk or anything else. And it will let you start the engine. It doesn't use computer chips (at least, I don't think it does!) I usually seal mine in a zip lock bag and put it in my outrigger pocket. The silly part of it is, once you get into your car via the front door, you can pop the trunk with the release beside the door, or open the back door manually, pull the seat button up and drop the back seat down to expose the trunk cavity.

Call your Honda dealer and make sure the valet key isn't equipped with a chip. If it is, you should be able to get a separate key made that will do nothing more than open the front door. Then you can put the ignition key and your regular clicker inside the car.

  2. I have an 04' CRV, and was told by the dealer that the key has a microchip inside of it that is matched to the car.  This is to prevent someone from going to a locksmith and making a duplicate key (theft prevention).  You could have gotten water inside where the chip is imbedded and of course salt water is really bad for stuff like that.  Car keys aren't the way they were a few years ago - just a piece of metal.....
