  1. You should take both as a junior. This way, you can retake them if you aren't happy with your scores.

You have to register for each. You have the choice of using the paper application (which you just ask your guidance counselor for) or apply online:

    SAT: www.collegeboard.com

    ACT: www.actstudent.org

  2. It depends on where the collage is that you are going to. If its on each coast taking the SAT is more popular but if its in the midwest the ACT is more popular.

  3. You don't have to take both, but you can take both the ACT and the SAT.  I recommend that you do so because you might end up doing better on one than the other (that is, after you study with a test prep book or something like that).  You should also plan on taking them as soon as possible, so now would be a good time to start.  Yes, you have to register for them.  You can either ask your guidance counselor at school, or you can register yourself at www.act.org for the ACT and www.collegeboard.com for the SAT.  Bottom line, take both tests this year (also consider some SAT Subject Tests because some schools require one, two, or three SAT Subject Test scores for admission).
