  1. Boys have always been boys, the main difference today is that alot of players are in the media so you see them or hear from them more often. The fact is they are good at what they do on the field. Lets face it if we were that good we'd be playing AFL too.

It might come across as arrogant but they are good enough to play at the highest level

  2. I think they are more arrogant now. They get more money and fame now and it goes to their head.

A friend of ours used to be a dealer at the Crown Casino in the Mahogany room. She dealt to a lot of stars and all were nice to her apart from some of the AFL players.

When some of  them lost their money, she would be blamed and have drinks thrown at her, be called names...sl*t, *****, F%$# CU&% ect.

So Yes I do think they are worse now :-)

  3. they have  always been the boys

  4. Of course AFL players  are arrogant, and any other high profile sportsperson and movie star.

And who is to blame ? the adoring fans who make ordinary people into superstars.

Twenty years ago the boofheads were starting to evolve when the big bucks came into suburban football and made a national game of the "Local footy"

Arrogance is a sign of the times, along with substandard morals.

There is nothing wrong with the boys being boys, as long as they mind their manners, and don't harm others.

    As the old saying goes.

"Money is the root of  all evil"

  5. Twenty years ago there wasn't the widespread coverage there is now, so it would appear that VFL players were more subdued - but hang on, Carey started first grade footy 20 years ago and he hasn't changed!

There will always be the likes of Buckley, Hird and Voss (and if your team has someone as adult and sensible as these boys, sorry I didn't name them) just as there will always be Wayne Kerr(as someone named him on another question) Bent Cousins and Gorilla Ablett Senior. People who lose human DNA when they take their footy boots off.

I think the players of 20 years ago were less idolised so they played up in mischievous rather than destructive ways - eg Brereton, Van Der Haar, and Sheedy as a player as well.

Had there been the 360 degree coverage of today, some of the less gifted intellectually may have misbehaved more 20 years back to get the attention morons crave.

  6. i think its got worse over the last 10 years for sure

  7. Yes most definitely they are more arrogant.  Today's players are targeted from from an early age and developed in what has become a very elitist system.

    Elitism breeds arrogance.

There is now a strong trend to give the kids with the outstanding potential the very best of everything to the point where it becomes overkill before a kid has even made the grade.

What in effect happens is that they are spoilt and become extremely self confident.  Bear in mind  that today's recruiters screen very heavily on not just football ability but background, character, family etc.  So in effect they are schooled in a number of areas outside football, of which public perception is a strong factor.  They look for a character that is a cut above the rest.

However team sports party culture will always be a factor in someone falling through the cracks.  It is not only prevalent in Australian Rules Football but team sports world wide.

No matter the education or indoctrination Boys will always be Boys especially if the shackles are momentarily cut.

  8. More money, more TV and print coverage more chances of players being caught, and yes more arrogance as they know how good the public thinks they are, why do we idolise these people, only a few are considered good roll models.

  9. boys have always been boys but a large percentage of AFL players are very arrogant

  10. boys will be boys. Just now we notice more with the media around
