they say they want to change the world, make the earth a better place, and end global warming and yet they own private jets, have over five cars, and have mansions that use up ten times more energy than an average person would.

  1. If Bob is a scientist, then the world really is in a sad state of affairs. When a scientist cannot tell the difference between facts and hypotheses, or proof and circumstantial evidence, then society as we know it must be on its last thread. Bob is no scientist--he sold his objective mind when the polarizing glasses of politics slid over his eyes.

Maybe one day he'll remember the basis on which true science was founded; empiricism and the scientific method. I wouldn't hold my breath

  2. Are you aware that Al Gore is donating every last penny that he made from the movie An Inconvenient Truth, as well as the money Mr. Gore made from winning the Nobel Peace prize to his foundations that are raising awareness about climate change?

Are you aware that he totally retrofitted his (yes large) house with solar panels and energy efficiency improvements and the like to try to offset the energy it uses.

Although I am against all the flying that everyone does, sometimes you need to put things in perspective. Al Gore has arguably created more Climate Change awareness than anyone on the planet. Do you think he would have had nearly as much influence if he did not go all over the place giving presentation in person, meeting high ranking and regular folk. Sometimes you need to take the bad with the good and weigh the overall effects.

Stop picking on the guy and recognize the amazing work that he has done to help push this extremely important issue to the forefront.

  3. Dear Bob, There isn't any "scientific facts that prove it's real, and mostly caused by us".  There are certain indications and theories that are tested on computer models.  However, computer models are only as good as the information that is put into them.

Most of the celebs/famous people are hypocritical with their "causes".  Gore takes private jets.  The Kennedys want alternative energy as long as it is by someone else's house.  Celebs have huge houses for one or two people.

If you really want to see good role models for green living, look to the Amish.  There isn't anyone that lives with a smaller carbon print.  Not everyone wants to live that way but everyone can find some good tips in the ways they do live.

  4. Well, you are misled. Al Gore converted his house to solar energy and has wind mills. He also owns hybrid cars along with Leo DiCaprio. George Clooney rides a motorcycle most of the time which conserves oil as well.

If anyone is contradictory it was d**k Cheney. After he was done test driving a new h2o car, he got into a Chevy Suburban....

    SOOOO...have fun with that.

    God Bless.

    =]

  5. Sarah, what have you done to enlighten the world on the topic?  Gore and the UN won a Nobel Peace Prize for their work.

Much of the lifestyle info passed around on Gore is inaccurate or exagerated.  In any case, what he says is largely true.  Don't shoot the messenger, and don't worry about the lifestyles of celebs.  Focus on your own, what your community does to address the situation, and national efforts.

Tomorrow is Earth Day.  A good day to recognize the worth of our planet and to take steps toward sustaining that worth for current and future generations.

  6. You have to separate Al Gore and other "celebs" who preach about Global Warming from the scientists and academics who do the same thing professionally (the James Lovelocks and Tim Flannerys and thousands of less well known people). The celebs have made their money in various ways and are now trying to "give back" to society by doing some good. Some are just trying to be charitable but some - and Al Gore is a good example - are truly passionate about their cause. They have the money and influence to get their voice heard globally (unlike your average scientist in his research institution) and they have little choice but to use planes and trains, etc., to move around the world. They are in a way the spokesmen for the scientists and we will ignore their message at our peril.

  7. It's amazing how jealous of the wealthy people can get.  Riches are not really that important.  Trying to excuse or justify such a shallow and shabby behaviour on political grounds is sophomoric and childlike.

  8. Sure, but it doesn't matter.

What Al Gore says or does has nothing to do with the scientific facts that prove it's real, and mostly caused by us.

I don't listen to Gore, but as a scientist, these folks get my attention:

The National Academy of Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute of Physics, the American Chemical Society, the American Geophysical Union, the American Meteorological Association, etc.

So, whether or not Gore is a hypocrite just doesn't matter.  We HAVE to do something about this.

EDIT - There are tons of facts and data proving it:

"I wasn’t convinced by a person or any interest group—it was the data that got me. I was utterly convinced of this connection between the burning of fossil fuels and climate change. And I was convinced that if we didn’t do something about this, we would be in deep trouble.”

Vice Admiral Richard H. Truly, USN (Ret.)

    Former NASA Administrator, Shuttle Astronaut

Here are two summaries of the mountain of peer reviewed data that convinced Admiral Truly and the vast majority of the scientific community, short and long.

EDIT 2 - To suggest that the National Academy of Sciences does not understand the scientific method or what scientific proof is, is not credible.

  9. No, I just think they want to spread the word about Global Warming, and no one seems to be listening to anyone else!!  Global Warming is very, very serious, and everyone could pitch in and do their part to help out, but there aren't very many people taking it seriously!!

  10. Good point, maybe they do care, but they arn't looking at how they are doing, but how others are doing.

  11. They are not just hypocrites, but egomaniac fools.

They will jump on any bandwagon which will get their names in the limelight.

They will not listen to, nor have the ability to comprehend science.

  12. Not as hypocritical as those who send our young off to war for the "safety of our country" and make millions in profit off their wasted lives.

  13. Well of course they are. If you want to save energy get yourself a cloths line. Is Algore or Tipper going to hang their clothes on a line? No. If you want to save gas walk or take a bike. Is Algore or Tipper going to take a bike? No. If you want save energy get a smaller well insulated home. Does Algore or Tipper have a small home? No.

  14. GW is a scam that many are making millions with. If it continues very long it will drive the hold world into a deep depression.

  15. You're thinking of Kenneth Copeland.

  16. Why does it matter what Al Gore or any other celebs do. It's up to us as individuals to make a difference. We shouldn't base our entire conception or understanding on what Al Gore or any one individual says. We should consider the data and scientific evidence from multiple sources. I agree with Bob, the use of real scientific resources is what *proves* global warming is real. Sceptics, you can go ahead and continue to deny the facts with your pseudo science, but the reality is the effects of global warming and environmental degradation are all around us. They are being felt at a global, national and personal scale. This is not a slight increase in temperature or a upward trend in global temperatures. It is an unprecedented global crises. We need to act as individuals, and as a society to better the world we live in. We can make a difference if we just stop burying our heads in the sand and pretending the problem doesn't exist, when clearly and undeniably it does.

  17. Most rich liberals are.   Even with all their so called green solution, they still have a larger carbon inprint.   They make a big deal about renting a green vehicle to go to award show, but THEY rent them rather than use them for their everyday purpose.   Al GOre is worse.  when he was able to make a difference, he went the other way instead.  The best way to get American to be green is to allow the Gas prices to go up.  Now that it's$4 a gallon, we see people dumpin their SUV, and start up compamies for alternative fuel is popping everywhere.   AL GOre decide to try to artificially lower gas prices so he would get elected.   Liberals preach that they can do everythig.  Provide a better life style  while still limiting our use of natural resources.   Frankly we all need to tighten our built, and allow prices to grow and restrict the resources to those with more money is the easier way of doing it.  Either that are become totally sociolist and no one have a nice lifestyle.

  18. Some are, and some are not.  In Al Gore's defense, he has made several improvements to his home to reduce its carbon foot print.  He is not as far along as Pres. Bush's Crawford ranch house, but then it was purpose built to be a low energy user.

Most of the people you are thinking of ar not so much hypocrites as elitists.  Essentially they believe that they know what all of us common folk need to do, and are prepared to make us do it through the use of government force, but expect to be exempted from the more onerous mandates because of who they are.  They are quite up front about this, so they are not hypocrites.

  19. Al Gore has no intention of reducing the huge quantity of CO2 emissions he is resposible for and he makes no appology for doing this even though he asserts that this type of thing is destroying the planet.

This doesn't seem to matter to his followers who don't seem to have a problem with that at all because they point out he's had a solar panel of unknown size put on his roof and and he writes a cheque every year for an unknown amount of money to an unknown company for CO2 offsets.

In a strange sort of way, it makes sense.  By wildly exagerating the effects of human made CO2 to his followers, he more than compensates for the fact that he personally acts like he doesn't give a dam.

Actually it's as hypocritical as a pedophile priest.

    Bob,

Not Vice Admiral Truly again.  He asked for more defence spending (like more jets and hummers) to counter climate change - not for people to car pool.

  20. I don't know about other celebs but do think Al Gore could have done a better job living a green lifestyle. He owns house much bigger than the norm which also uses exponentially more energy than the norm.

I believe Gore has the correct rhetoric but not as much the lifestyle. In part Gore is focusing more on governmental than consumer change. I believe his views and lifestyles are probably starting to shift a bit as a result of recent criticism of his lifestyle.

Here is a link to a story on how such criticism spurred Gore to make improvements to his mansion like CFL's , LED's, rainwater collection system, as well as solar and geothermal units. Since he instituted these changes his gas bill dropped 93% and his electric 11%. "Gore has also said he invests in renewable energy such as solar and wind power to balance 100 percent of his electricity usage". How's that for turning over a new leaf?

Personally I'm proud of Gore. The people spoke and unlike many politicians Gore actually listened to what they had to say.

Edit: If I were Gore I'd at least do one more thing. Reduce the size of or at least increase the occupants living in his mansion. Even with these reductions via greening his house he still consumes significantly more than the average American. I do believe he will continue to work on things and we'll see more improvements coming.

  21. HE>LL N(O

    I"M DRUNMK

    TG:BAGWAR<aomg

    WE ARE CIN CONRTOL

  22. yes. they preach to us about creating less c02 emissions when they use planes, cars, trains more than the average person.

    ")

  23. Even if they are hypocrites, it does not mean they are wrong about global warming.

  24. Absolutely! GW maybe real, but the chances that it is man made are getting smaller by the day now that more prominent scientist are coming out saying man is not to blame. But it seems in today's world everything has to be trendy; and right now GW is it. In 5 years it will be like the Furbys; nobody will want to believe that they were apart of it.

  25. I dont know if i would call all those people who preach the effects of global warming. However i do that in 2007 Al Gore went through twice the amount of electricity in one month that the average american goes through in a year.

  26. Generally speaking, that would appear to be the case. There is absolutely no way that anyone can justify living in a mansion nowadays, unless there is a trade-off, such as buying carbon credits, or unless the mansion is retrofitted with a source of energy that is an eco-friendly alternative to the typical energy source that just about everyone is dependent upon. To my knowledge, Al Gore has done some things to his mansion that is more eco-friendly than the average homeowner's home, whether he or she lives in a mansion or not. The bottom line is, Earth can not reasonably sustain the sort of lifestyle that many people want to live with the world population growing at such an exponential rate. We may want to believe that we can have our cake and eat it too, but we are quickly finding out what the price is that we must pay for our misguided principles.

  27. Al Gore was elected The Centuries Biggest Hypocrite.

  28. Every celeb has to find a way to "give back", you know?

It's BS if you ask me. Sure, they're making a positive difference, but is all for personal gain.

    In my humble opinion. =D

  29. In a word (k)NO(w)

  30. Gore has his carbon offset business to protect, so no GW = no carbon offset business

  31. A HOAX! There's no global warming caused by humans, just a natural cycle the earth goes through.
