Do you think Aleem Dar is a better umpire than Simon Taufel?

I have long felt that Aleem Dar is the best umpire around in the post-Shepherd and Bucknor era. Do you agree that he is at least as good as Taufel and that he deserves to get an ICC Umpire of the Year award?

  1. ALeem dar is not far behind to Taufel

  2. no hes not as god as Taufel, but he is a good u umpire hes made a few mistakes like allot of them have so i think hel get better ,....can umpires get better?

and he looks like waquar Younis

    .

  3. Aleem Dar is indeed a good umpire and there is a reason why he has been voted in the top two umpires, but Simon Taufel is better ...

  4. no

  5. Simon Taufel & Aleem Dar are two of the most sensible umpires I've noticed. They know how to handle the on field activities with calm & composure and I'm very impressed with the number of accurate decisions they make.

I tend to agree with you on Aleem Dar being a sort of under-rated as he isn't ranked or I should say "mentioned" much when we talk about the best umpires around. He looks like he's just as much focussed as an umpire can be/ expected to be. But he is certainly acknowledged by the ICC, he's the first p**i umpire to be included in ICC elite panel.

One more thing I'd like to add- He's one of the most uncontroversial umpires!

EDIT--- However, being so accurate for so much of the time does put additional pressure on you & all umpires can make errors but Dar is consistant for MOST part.

During the Trent Bridge test b/w England & New Zealand, the "best" umpire Taufel too made some errors which resulted in him being called "Awful Taufel" by the British press.

So umpires too get into some bad time but what counts is for how OFTEN does he makes errors!!

EDIT EDIT EDIT--- kookee, you just used some really sick language here callin me & Rehman "LAPDOGS", now just look at yourself & think hard, who's the biggest whinger here who can't digest OTHERS' opinions!!

Don't try to threaten people here (its another thing you do that through e-mails), now this is an open forum so be in your LIMITS AND KNOW YOUR ROLE!!

No one bothers you though because you're an immature "wannabe champ"!!

  6. As many have said a good umpire is an umpire who can stay out of the spotlight. All umpires have bad games and then they have games which are second to none. Simon is the stone faced umpire who has full control of a game and never backs down, Aleem Dar on the other hand when he gives a batsman out he will very quickly turn away or look down. He will have to work on this to be number one. All and all though they are both top umpires who still have many years ahead of them. I personally have umpired with both types of umpire, having done one game with Asoka Da Silva who is a very in the background umpire and also did one game with Brent 'Billie' Bowden whos name says it all. Up and coming umpires should watch Simon Taufel, Aleem Dar and Asoka Da Silva umpire and model yourself on them because the world only needs one Billie Bowden. :-)

  7. yes he is cool and non bias ~

  8. Ni,i do not like Dar.He has made many mistakes while umpiring this year alone..

Simon Taufel is the best, he is non biast and has been voted as best umpire for a few years in a row..

  9. Dear My Nickname IDK,

It is good you asked this question. I have long felt the same as you . I think he is indeed comparable to Taufel.

By the way, you need to consider some of the official rankings very carefully. For example, in August 2006 in the ICC's annual umpire review Taufel was officially ranked second for accuracy, behind Darrell Hair ?? Now these stats are always hazy, what is the yardstick for measurement when one comes up with those figures? And do not forget that in Trent Bridge in 2004 he was branded "Awful Taufel" by the British press !

Please do  keep in mind whilst drawing a comparison, Aleem Dar has umpired in more ODI's and Tests than Taufel, so one would have to give that much more leeway in evaluating some tough decisions. After all, and very unfortunately, it simply takes one match to significantly injure an umpires credibility. In the same context it speaks volumes on the integrity of Dar that he has stood in numerous high profile matches, including several India-Pakistan ODI matches (not to say five Ashes test matches). Nothing can beat an Indian or Pakistani umpire getting a nod for an Indo-Pak match does it?

Very recently I am sure you remember that he won accolades for his performance in the 2007 WI-England series along with Bowden for taken some pretty good decisions in what were very difficult situations. A high-water mark in his career and the best any umpire can get !

Keep in mind Dar, is low profile and thus rarely gets the spot-light on himself. He does not obtrude on players and does not have the officiousness of Darrel Hair. In fact, I quote here from Wikipedia "the fact that Dar's name rarely appears in the press is testament to his ability as an umpire, reflecting that he never tries to impose himself on the games he umpires, and more importantly that he gets decisions right."

Good question and one that has been long overdue I think !

    Rehman of Multan

EDIT: I do agree with the several good points made by CJ.

  10. Simon Taufel is better

  11. No. Taufel has been named as the number 1 international umpire several successive years. Accept it
