Do you think Alicia Sacramone's score was a rip off?

I don't understand how a gymnast can fall on the vault and still get a solid score.. I'm not hating on China but I seriously think Alicia deserves better.

Does anyone agree with me?

  1. Do some research and learn how scores are calculated before ranting.

Landing is not the only important element in vault score. A bad landing Chung did deducted 0.8 pts according to the scoring system. Execution also includes jump and performance in the air which Chung did very well. So the 8.5 pts Chung got is legit.

Now if you think landing is most important factor, when you cannot land properly, there should be massive deduction of points, sorry it could be American rule but not international rule. When you compete in international matches, you follow international rule.

The purpose of the scoring system is to prevent conservative gymnast choosing easy vault and wait for top gymnast to make a mistake on high difficulty vault. The game is for awarding best gymnasts, not conservative ones, otherwise you will see gymnasts doing 1 somersault vault, everyone landed perfectly and we will have a very  boring game

  2. Not really.

    Gymnast mark divided into 2 part. A & B

    A: Difficulty mark

    B: Performance Mark

Please compare China's A mark and Sacramone's A mark and then you will keep your mouth shut.

  3. I know that she was ripped off. I watch the Olympics faithfully. I am a huge fan of all the american athletes. I think that the fact that a Chinese Gymnast fell and got a solid score speaks for itself/ She worked hard to get there. although she has her team medal, she deserved and earned an indivisual medal. I just hope that this does take her interest away from a sport that her heart belongs too.

  4. Ok for all of you who are blaming china for another US failure, i think you're honestly forgetting something: a contender's score is the average of TWO vaults. And if you recall, Cheng Fei's first vault was nearly perfect, and was an extremely high score. In her second vault, besides the failed landing, there erally wasnt much for the Judges to deduct. THerefore an average of her scores still allowed cheng fei an advantage over Alicia Sacramone.

And one more thing: pretending IF cheng fei in fact should have gotten higher deductions, you are all making it sound like china cheated. there are no more chinese judges than judges from any other country, therefore no one should be blaming the chinese at all.

Please stop getting your sympathetic feelings in the way of reality. The scoring WAS fair. Sacramone deserved bronze but she really didn't earn it...tough.

the other way around, everyone was cheering on Paul Hamm in the all-around in Athens, nobody even care about the fair treatment and mis-judge (yea, the real-misjudge) to the poor Korean guy.

  5. I agree. If it was the other way around the American wouldn't even get a medal!

A beautiful vault getting a lower score than one in which the person fell is totally a rip off!

  6. YES!! I agree with you.

  7. Obviously ripped off, but not China's fault considering they didn't do the scoring.

A large start value drops when the elements aren't executed properly, otherwise competitors would put all the difficult elements in whether they could do them or not.

  8. Blaming China here is obviously ridiculous because the judges are all from different countries.  Blaming the judges is something else, and that is what I would do in this case.  Each time I watched the other landings, I couldn't understand how Alicia kept getting bumped down.  When it ended, the only thing I could think of was "rip-off".  Afterwards, Bob Costas interviewed Bela Karolyi, and Bela confirmed my criticism.  He called the judges actions "inadmissible".  He called it a blatant rip-off.  No, neither of us are completely objective, of course not.  But I've been watching Olympics since Nadia Comaneci in the 1976 Montreal Olympics (I was 9), I'm not a pro or anything, but honestly, I could not understand a 4th place for Alicia.  I thought it was a total rip-off.

  9. no

  10. one thing people don't understand is it's just not about doing everything perfectly, it's also about the difficulty. What the chinese girl did was more difficult than what alicia did, so even if she fall she still has a high mark.

So if sm1 does smth easier than other opponents and does everything perfectly, do you think it's fair to others who does more difficult moves & also does perfectly but both gets same marks??

  11. no. her score wasent too low. the chinese girls score was too high. alicia should have gotten the bronze.

  12. yeah because thats girl from china got like a 15 and she fell! WTF!? i am not hating on china either but i thought that was wrong because some people who didnt fall got a lower score than china. once again WTF!? i think Alicia deserves the bronze

wow yaw love to hate. but you no what i don't have nothing against yaw because i respect people opinions

  13. Yes, Alicia was ripped off. Fei came off the mat almost in tears because

she KNEW she had blown it. The people here who are saying it's

all about the scoring and difficulty are right AND wrong. It's true that

Fei had a higher difficulty level but she landed out of bounds on her

first vault. She didn't get any deductions for that (or not enough). She

messed up her second vault completely. She had her legs apart, her

shoulders weren't squared up causing her hands to touch seperately

which means she didn't get enough lift which caused her bad landing.

She was almost in tears, remember? She KNEW it was a bad vault

and she still managed to get a higher score than Alicia who had two

good vaults. The deductions Fei should have gotten should have put

her out of medal contention. Alicia should have gotten the bronze.

I noticed someone talking about Paul Hamm and his medal. He

shouldn't have gotten that medal! I was upset when he did get it.

I remember he had a terrible fall and that should have taken him

out of medal contention or at least moved him to the very end of it.

And one last thing. I'm not talking bad about any of these athletes.

It's not their fault the judges make such grievous mistakes which

they have to live with. You gotta remember, these people work long

and hard to get there and it's got to be almost impossible for them

to give up a medal that's awarded to them even when they know

    they shouldn't have won it.

  14. Absolutely yes. Especially compared to the other vaulters. That Bela or Bella guy had a right to be pissed.

The judges have the authority to change the Difficulty mark but they're too chicken **** to do it. Now keep YOUR mouth shut, Notoriously Ignorant Guy. The chinese looked like c**p on their vaults and all their scores were too high. It was the same scandal as the all-around judging. More of the same. At least the floor routine judges weren't as biased.

The Q asked wasn't 'What were the scores' you moron. The Q asked was if we thought the judges scored her too low. I stand by my answer.

  15. Yes.

And i am and was hating on China.... Alicia deserved a better score and the little Chinese chick FELL and got a good score.

    i was infuriated.

  16. No. Sacramone was given a higher "Judged" score than Cheng Fei on the second vault.

    Sacramone: 9.525

    Cheng: 8.550

Sacramone was not ripped off by the judges, but by her own self doubt.
