  1. Hi Chief Joseph,

I think that, when you travel to another country, no matter which country it is, a very, very basic form of respect is to learn a little bit of the language, especially if you are on business.

I guess if you're on vacation it should be enough for an American in Mexico knowing how to say "por favor" & "gracias", and you, as a native, cannot say "get out of here!" to a tourist only for not having taken a 3-year course! But for people working, that should be a MUST.

And I guess it's pretty the same for mexicans going to the US, if you go there, and only stay for the money, but you don't make any effort to learn the language, to GET INVOLVED with the community and so forth, what kind of treatment could you expect?, forget about the relationship between Mexico and the US, it happens everywhere!, it's pretty the same what happens with turks in Germany, or Northern-Africans in Spain and France.

  2. That's up to the Mexicans.  Report all illegal employers at http://wehirealiens.com/

  3. YES ,IT BE IN THERE BEST INTEREST TO DO SO

  4. Yes, it would make sense to any intelligent person that they learn to speak Spanish if they'll be living in Mexico.  I don't insult 'most developed countries' for being bilingual -- which shows the difference in character between you and me.

  5. If they want to be citizens of Mexico, they would need to speak Spanish. Just like illegals who want to live here and possibly become citizens need to pay taxes, need to follow the law, need to respect our sovereignty, need to embrace our culture, and -- yes -- need to speak English. It's both a matter of principle and a matter of practicality, for one can't succeed in the U.S. without knowing English.

  6. yeah they should

where ever you go you should learn their language

if the Americans in mexico wont learn spanish they should come home no one should bend over backwards for them

I feel the EXACT same way about illegals here

LEARN THE LANGUAGE OR GO HOME!!!

  7. No because they go there to vacation not to live, and we already try to learn Spanish in the USA I know lots of people who can speak basic Spanish but not lots of Hispanics who even attempt to learn basic English and then get all pissed off at us when they want to live here and expect to communicate normally.

  8. Many/most well educated people in Mexico know English.  That said, most US citizens will pick up enough Spanish to get by.  Fact is the USA is already becoming bilingual but it will be several years before it is acknowledged.  Try going into a fast food restaurant in the Southwest or west coast and see if any of the clerks can take an order in Spanish, there is almost always someone there that can.

Now for a little geography lesson.  The use of the word American to denote a US citizen is incorrect.  America indicates the continent, which means that Mexican or Canadian citizens are technically Americans.  The same is true for those in South America.  I learned this the hard way when I first visited Brazil.  They think it is rude that USA citizens think they are the only Americans.  Of course, I knew what you meant.

  9. Yes, if at all possible.  If anyone is living there or working there for any period of time, they should take advantage of any opportunities to learn another language simply for the purpose of becoming better educated.

Understanding the language would help them enjoy their stay much more.  Also, it could help one avoid getting into situations you would not want to be in.

  10. In a bilingual or trilingual country, not all citizens speak all of the official languages.  It just means that the populace is entitled to official documents and services in those languages.

But sure, if one is going to live in a Spanish speaking country, it would be good to speak the language.  However for a long time, immigrants to North America have lived in enclaves where they didn't have to adopt the dominant language and it still happens.  The next generation assimilates.

  11. No I think that is stupid for them to do that here so why over there we've live like this for many years why fix what we shouldn't its what makes us different.

  12. No, they want our Yankee dollars tambien! Hablo Ingles!

  13. I believe Americans living in Mexico are there because they are fluent in Spanish or wish to improve their Spanish speaking skills.  My son went to med school in Guadalajara because he spoke such fluent Spanish.  Med school was extremely difficult because EVERY paper had to be written in Spanish, as well.  But, he persevered and is now in demand as a bilingual doc in the U.S.  He always was a smart boy!

  14. If they are living in Mexico or working there for any length of time it would be a good idea.

  15. Americans in Mexico should learn Spanish, and I think most do.

If Mexico(which is not bilingual) or many bilingual or trilingual nations want to be as successful and prosperous as the U.S., they should adopt a more monolingual style. It's better for economics.

  16. The Mexican government (unlike the US) is not going to spend millions of dollars in money to make everything in dual languages to include English to cater to those who can not and will not speak their official language.  If you are going to another country you should learn to speak the language that the majority of the population speaks so you can at least communicate.

  17. Americans in Mexico do speak Spanish, too bad the Mexicans in the U.S. can't speak English.

  18. Yup, fair is fair

  19. why are we still on the metric system? but I don't speak Spanish and you would be surprised the Hispanics that don't

of course people call you a coconut or some other blur but it is the same as some Filipinos don't speak Tagalog or a Japanese kid don't speak Japanese.

most people in the US don't bother to speak a second language..even when you take Spanish in High School you forget..I took French in college because I went to Quebec to Europe a lot..but I forgot a lot of the lingo...

I am retire and when I have a few drinks some of the Spanish comes back..all the BS..but it is hard enough to learn one language...my wife is a Filipina and she lived in Japan for six years..so Japanese is very hard and she forgot most of this too..

  20. Nazism.

They believe to be the MASTER RACE, those called to rule the world with THE LANGUAGE

They say that Spanish is the language of the servants

  21. The U.S. is more successful than most nations or countries partly because our primarily language is English.  Just the facts.

The term "Anglo-monolingual" used in the context you used it shows your in need of some serious English lessons yourself.

  22. Actually, no.  I've seen plenty of Americans live abroad and not learn English.

  23. i think if you are in a country of any kind you should speak that langaue or not be there

  24. Yes I do and I think most Americans are respectful enough to do so. Too bad people coming into the U.S. can't show the same level of respect.

  25. It might be helpful.  Just like it would be helpful for people in the USA to learn English.  Let's not forget though that our country is large and occupies lands which had a different predominant language to which we did not adapt.  I see it more of a problem when people don't learn English in New England, but Texas is another story and both of the inhabitants that lived there for centuries deserve to preserve their cultures without suffering repercussion from political and historical consequences of which their governments were responsible.

  26. No I think Mexicans need to learn English or get out of Here!! I'm sorry, But I draw the line when I see a sign written in Spanish before English. It's ridiculous!
