Do you think Americas obsession with SUVs started in the early 90s with OJ Simpsons Bronco chase in LA ?

I ask this seeing how the SUV is now being labeled dead and or almost obsolete in America culture due to its horrible mileage, self-centeredness, and iconic image of being what needs to be done away with in America. I was thinking, when did the SUV craze/obsession really start? I know there were precursors to OJ's Broncos and SUVs in the 1980s, but it really seemed to start then....

  1. Well it was a nice ride...

No, well at least everyone didn't go home and kill their spouse.

  2. The craze in my opinion started when minivan moms got used to the larger vehicle and dad decided to side step the van and fulfill the need for roominess with power. Pesonal opinion but the chrysler caravan started the big brawler period. btw I think people are idiots for driving big vehicles with bad gas mileage but then again i am poverty level student so go figure.

  3. I worked as an executive assistant to a guy who was always cheating on his wife. Late 80's. I remember her catching him one time. The only way she would stay was if he bought her a white Jeep. After all, all the wealthy ladies were driving one.

  4. That's a big No!

  5. Certainly not. In fact Ford reported that after that infamous video they had a large drop in sales for the Ford Bronco.

There's a variety reasons for the increase of popularity of SUV's, but the "OJ video" isn't one of them.

  6. It probably helped. But, we are not the only ones who engage in "me too" behavior like that. In the late 1960s in Japan a man pulled off a brilliant robbery of an armored car and got away with a large amount of money. When the police announced that his get away car was a Toyota Corolla, the sales of that model soared! Toyota even had a TV ad that featured a masked man peeling away from the curb in a Corolla. LOL!

  7. Monster Truck Rallies . Not to forget those. Huge wheels on truck body high off the ground did it. Also All Terrain Vehicles and four wheel drives were of help plus sales of big Toyota    pick up trucks. These were sold in 1995 .

  8. you mean the strictly yuppie vehicle or simply useless vehicle? They suck.

  9. I don't think SUVs were ever a craze.  My family has had like ten cars, and only 2 or 3 were SUVs, and I live in Minnesota, where anything but an SUV is liable to fail due to ice.

  10. No , only the jury was razzled & dazzled by a vicious cold blooded murderer .
