by all accounts, it seems it will be a hung government. I couldn't imagine Bertie joining forces with Sinn Fein, anyone disagree?

  1. I honestly don't think Bertie would go into a coalition with Sinn Féin, Sinn Féin are far too socialist orientated and considering one party want to increase tax (Sinn Féin) and Fianna Fáil hope to reduce it I can't imagine them being very suitable as a pair.

On the other hand, if the PDs don't get enough seats and Labour and Fine Gael are close to forming a coalition then I think Bertie might consider them as a last hope.

After all, if you want something bad enough you'll go to any length to get it.

  2. Bertie wont go into coalition with Sinn Fein. I just think its too soon for this country to have Sinn Fein in Power but tiocfaidh ar lá

  3. Political suicide for FF to form a coalition with SF, as the later is establishing roots that could see it expand considerably over the next decade, possibly even becoming a major political force in southern politics. If this hypothesis were correct, FF would stand to lose the most at the expense of a SF rise, as SF have already bitten off most of the left wing vote they can chew.

That said, FF are the majesties of the unpredictable, and are scaringly flexible in changing allegiance between the PD's and Labour, as recent history has highlighted. To a FF party that needs votes, there appears to be little difference between a Mick McDowell or a Brendan Howlin, two completely different political characters.

It could go two ways: FF to lose about ten seats, PD's to hold 3 with Harney a major casualty in Ath Cliath. The Rainbow have just enough to make it and Enda is installed as Taoiseach, with Rabbite taking Finance and Tanaiste, and Trev opting for Transport or the Environment. Bert throws in the towel as leader of FF, and Spliffo's internal party advocates are banging phones the country over, and before 24 hours have elapsed Spliffo is installed as leader and proceeds, along similar lines as he has done over the entire election, to pick up the flack.

Scenario 2 is also a distinct possibility, and would see FF sign their death warrant by accepting SF's marriage proposal in some dark room up in Citywest. The rainbow don't have enough seats to make it to the promised land, despite desperate calls to Tony Gregory and a visit to Joe Higgins' semi detached residence (he probably doesn't have a mobile, if he does it's definately meteor) somewhere in working class Dublin, and thus the republican government takes shape. Adams seeks the portfloio of education for Mary Lou or that soft spoken dude from Cavan, to join forces with the North's education minister, also a SF member. Adams and Spliff are at pains to gain the tanaiste portfolio, Adams would have to be favourite though.

I would say it's a toss up between these at the moment - with the first scenario the more likely.

  4. I think Bertie will definitely get back in power and judging by a  visit last week, it seems that Sinn Fein will get a number of seats and will be willing to sit with him, especially after what has happened in the North over the last few years.  Everyone wants to be in power but I can't see Enda looking after Adams the way Bertie would.

  5. Maybe, but maybe not!

  6. Bertie wont join wit sinn fein and will get back in power i think
