I know that's looking a bit far ahead, but we already know that Big Brown won't be around to race next year.. do you think he'll be in the Classic, though?

It would be great to see Curlin vs Big Brown!

  1. yup this horse has a heart for racing

  2. i dont know for sure, but there are whispers that he will go straight to stud (the breeding barn) after the Belmont!

i guess his breeding potential far out weighs the risks in continuing him racing!

  3. If BB can pull off the Belmont as easily as he took the Derby and Preakness then I'd surely love to see him run in the Breeder's Cup and prove himself a true champion.

  4. hope so, I would  love to see him take on Curlin too!!!

  5. It would be nice, but since his connections have essentially flipped off racing fans, they may not want to take any more risk than they absolutely have to.

Big Brown vs. Curlin? That's certainly possible. If BB rides roughshod over the field in the Belmont like he did in the Preakness, it would be pretty pointless running him against three year olds again. Im sure Dutrow will want to give him a decent break after the Belmont before drawing up plans for a fall schedule-if, in fact, there will BE a fall schedule for the big guy.

  6. Actually, despite what the above says, the owners have publicly stated that he will race until the end of his three year old season, and then be retired (like many previous three year olds in his position). So yes, he will probably make it into the Classic. Do I think he'll win? Against Curlin? Probably not, but you never know until the thing is done.

Jim M: Read again. They have publicly stated that they will run him even if he wins the crown. Don't infer; read the statements. They're more accurate than what anyone THINKS.

Edit: Andrew Beyer recently wrote that Big Brown, in short, will not be a great horse unless he runs in the fall. If he does not run after the Belmont, then I will not consider him a great whether or not he wins.

  7. well they may say he'll run out his three year old year, but if he wins the triple crown which now he's shown its his to lose they will retire him.  since we haven't had a horse win the crown in 30 years the stud fee for him will be astounding we're talking millions of dollars per shot.  no intelligent individual would risk that kind of money over sportsmanship or winning a couple more races.  he would make more money on one shot as a stud than he would make over the rest of his career racing.  its just not worth the risk.  the only time you see a huge money horse racing later in their career is if they have been gelded.  big brown will spend the rest of his life after Belmont being a enormously high priced stud.

  8. Unfortunately, he'll probably retire after the Belmont.  I would love to see him race on, but his owners are in the sport for the money, not so much the sportsmanship. From what I've heard, he probably will retire after the Belmont, which is just too bad -- the sport needs a horse like him to stick around.  I too want to see how he would do against Curlin -- what an amazing race that would be!
