Do you think Cyprus should have been annexed to Greece in 1960?

Please bear in mind that about 97% of Greek Cypriots voted for unification in a referendum in the late 1950's.

Today however far less would vote for unification. Why is this so? We have many Greek Cypriots changed their mind?

  1. I thought Greeks and Greek Cypriots already tried it. And caused the partition as a result. Why are you scratching the old wounds of the Greeks? Aren't you happy that the two communities are finally talking?

  2. southcyprus is a greek part  and north cyprus is a turkish part. one must explain me what are the differences between greekcypriots and greeks!!!i can not find any different so i do not understand why cyprus is an another country and no a greek part!

  3. for the simple reason that Cyprus has a much better economy than Greece ;-) an 'annexation' as u said wouldn't help them at all actually it would have make the things worse for the Cypriots..and of course the cost for this would be huge for Greece too..

  4. No.

  5. well, back then independance from the UK meant union with Greece (for several reasons). Now Cyprus is sovereign and with an economy larger than the EU average, i don't see a single reason why Cyprus should be unified with Greece when just yesterday the RoC president and TC leader started in-depth discussons for a solution of the Cyprus problem (a problem that started when Turks used enosis as an excuse to invade Cyprus)

  6. Cyprus is an independent country. It shouldn't have been annexed to Greece.

Of course, the largest part of its history is Greek:

I hope that the two sides, the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots will manage to form a united Cyprus in the future. When this day comes I also hope that all Turks who are not Cypriots and came to Cyprus from Turkey to stay in the Greek villages and houses will go back to Turkey:

The Turkish troops must also leave Cyprus.

Moreover, where are all the missing people since 1974?

  7. You know well. A lot of things happened. Back then, Makarios became Archbishop (well he got the name after he became Archbishop), and he was for the 'enosis' at the time. But for the sake of this enosis, some Greek warriors (I hope you are not like them) took up arms, and murdered a good number of Brits, Turkish Cypriots, and opposing Greek Cypriots (for two decades). These were seen as rumors and kinda OK first, until they went after the head of the Archbishop himself (communist Greek junta anyone?). Certainly these 'Greek warriors' were encouraged by the inaction of the 'great' nations who overlooked these just like they have done in African massacres; they even imposed inaction. I think the 'Greek warriors' might have thought that they could get away with murdering those "low lifes". Now Cypriots are kinda aware of what has happened as a result of enosis ambitions, and also they are independent (and the only wholly Asian EU country to boost), back then they were part of the British empire, so they were choosing between Brits and Greeks. For the question in the title, no, not with people like Grivas, Sampson and Papadapoulos (who fortunately lost in the 2008 elections with 1.5% of the vote).

  8. deniz, just to set things straight. The warriors you mention wanted the British out of the island, which is fair. Why should the British rule an island with Greek and Turkish population? The Turkish Cypriots went against this independence movement, and this caused the opposition of Greek Cypriots to Turkish Cypriots. They could have been joint against the British.

And the junta was definitely not communist, it was extreme right wing, in fact teh Greek junta was persecuting and torturing communists.
