Question:

Do you think EGO / PRIDE destroys all good relationships?

I grew up thinking that pride is a good thing but now I realized it made me lose many good things in life, such as friends, jobs and ultimately lost the very thing I protected, pride. So my ego or pride made me lose my pride. What about you? Do you agree?

  1. i agree with all your answers when we are only concerned with our ego then we cannot see what others need. people who are obsessed themselves are

    narsists

  2. If you said an out of control ego I would agree.

But Freud said the ego is the "executive" of the faculty of reason, and must act as rationally as any company executive. If it does that, it is under control and ought to be the source of better relationships.

False pride is what comes from an ego out of control. When it is properly controlling of your rationality, pride is what you feel when you hit a home run or when your daughter wins the high dive.

It isn't the act of feeling better than other people.

  3. wow. thats very deep dude. i think pride is a very dangeous thing. it can stop you from saying and doing thins that you really need to say and do. it can keep you from truly being yourself. . . and thats the only person you CAN be. so yes i think ego and pride can destroy any relationship if it is not worked on.

  4. First ego to me is used more today as something negative, or selfish. Pride on the other hand still can have a redeeming value. You can be very proud of an accomplishment as long as you do not allow that pride to define your sense of self. Things we do can have a certain amount of pride attached as long as you don't limit that as your only reason for being.

  5. i feel pride and ego are diferent.

    Ego certainly destroys relationships

  6. it  does...    and    $$$$   also!

  7. I struggled with pathalogical narcissism for most of my life.  I was always comparing myself to others to make sure I was on top.  If someone could run a mile 10 seconds faster than I could, they were God and I was junk.  I had to be smarter than others.  I couldn't ever be wrong.  And, yeah, it kept me from getting close to people.  I never made real connections with people because I always had to be better than them or I felt worse or different than them.  I never just related to people as a fellow human being.

  8. Pride and ego destroy a lot of good relationships, but don't forget about the love of money...

Actually, I think the one thing that destroys more relationships than anything else is SELFISHNESS.  Pride is a form of selfishness.  So is greed.  You can add inflexibility to that list as well.  I find that people whose lives revolve around themselves are the ones with the fewest friends and the fewest meaningful relationships.

  9. Having to much pride is a bad thing. Thinking to highly of yourself just makes the fall even worse, because sooner or later, you'll find out you're not all you think you are. But having no pride would lead to a lack of confidence, which is also not good.
