I work, but my boss has been forced to decrease my work hours because the way the economy has been lately. I live in a small town and there are not many jobs here. I'm looking for a second job, but until then, I need to use food stamps. My food stamps has already been set, but food prices have been increasing and my food stamps that I receive is just not cutting it anymore. I personally think the government should increase our food stamps if food prices keep going up daily. I'm having to decide between buying medication I need or buying food now.

  1. At least you are getting assistance.  What about those that don't qualify because they make $5 more than the cut off income amount.  They have to make their paycheck stretch and so do you.  Try purchasing in bulk:  large quantities of meat (Sams Warehouse); mix your meats with vegetables to increase your meat supply; plus your family learns to eat better, thus healthier.  Lessen drinks with sugar.  I tend to buy lemons and limes and make homemade lemonade more often.  By all means, every family deserves a night out:  save up for that day by treating your family to a picnic at a nice lake or nearby park; or trek to MCDonalds: they have a better healthier menu these days still at a reasonable cost.

  2. What I'm about to say isn't going to be popular, but I don't want the government forcing me to feed you with my tax dollars. Helping those in need should be done by private charities not the government. I give to charities that do help the less fortunate, but tax dollars go to alot of programs that I do not agree with. Sorry your having problems, my advice find a private resource for help instead of burdening tax dollars.

  3. definitely, it is hard to get by on assistance of any kind but they should always take into effect a cost of living increase during an obvious crisis.

  4. Well I don't think so.

  5. I think so! Unfortuntally I dont think that the goverment has actually made a plan to do that.

  6. Food stamps should be stopped. Why should the hard working people pay for you having a bad job?.The free stuff and hand out are never enough.. The heater for my pool is not working and I'm having to decide between buying medication I need or fixing the pool heater.

  7. I think because MOST people who get "assistance" don't actually need it I am leary of saying yes. Anyone who can afford with their own money to buy a pack of cigarettes, yet "needs" food stamps to buy food for their family (one example I've personally seen), they shouldn't get help because they obviously aren't budgetting properly. Too bad if you used to smoke, if you're so poor that you need MY money to buy food, s***w your cigarettes, use your money for NEEDS, not sickening habits.

I've also been behind a woman in a store who literally bought sushi and a pepsi with her food stamps... I'm sorry, but like with cigarettes, sushi and pepsi both are completely unneccessary and if you "NEED" help for food, DO NOT dare to buy frivolous things that waste the help you get... it's ultimately my money, my grandparents money, and other tax payers' money being wasted, so ultimately, I'm VERY skeptical about people "needing" help. However, my other grandmother did, for about one year, need to get assistance after her divorce, she didn't take food stamps, just welfare, and as soon as she could, she got off of it because it shamed her-I wish more people were like she was/is.

If you genuinely need help, after doing all you can, then for a time it is ok, but again, MOST people are simply lazy and allow "the government" to perpetuate their laziness.

Edit: We have three kids, we pay over $500 per month in health costs, and we are expecting a baby in November... and we are a single income household. We do not have ANY television/satelite cabel whatever, so that eliminates one expense. We also shop at Winco, not Raley's or other overpriced stores. Natural, unprocessed foods are always well under what unhealthy, processed foods are. Canned beans (not chili, real beans), rice, ground beef, and a lot of produce is fairly inexpensive and very healthy. None of the frozen pizzas, hamburger helper, premade tv dinner c**p... buy real food, and buy store brands...

You will find that even a TIGHT budget can be doable. And if you can't make due, but are physically fit, you either need two jobs, OR, you need to try to find a better job. What about a state job? As much as I HATE public sector work, it is an option and it's better than taking in welfare.
