Question:

Do you think I could play tennis?

I'm 6'0, and the starting point guard on my schools basketball team. I'm pretty quick, and I can even dunk. Anyways, I want to play another sport too, and I was thinking tennis, since I'm way to skinny for football, even though I'm fast enough. I know you need stanima to play tennis, and I got that easily. Think I have a remote chance of making the team atleast even though I've never picked up a racquet a day in my life?

  1. Tennis is an amazingly complex sport. For starters there are grips and strokes to learn which can take years to perfect. However you are in somewhat of an advantage as you are 6'0 and quick. In the tennis world tall and agile players are rare. This means you have the potential  to have a great projected total of force that you can apply to your serve as you have an increased height of release and quite possibly, a dominating volley ( Serve and Volley game ).I know first hand how ridiculously hard it is to make that return passing shot against a 6'0 serve and volleyer.

This is what you should aim for as it is the most easiest path of choice for your physique. It will take time and dedication but don't give up. I hope your a fast learner if your hoping to join a tennis team however, have you ever thought of opting for a doubles game instead of singles (especially if your left handed) Serve and volleyer's are great in doubles matchers as the aim is to generally get to the net first.

    - The first thing you need is a coach or an experienced hitting partner. Try joining a local club.

    - Learn the Rules

    - Learn the Grips. Such as the Continental grip.

    - Learn the strokes and stances of tennis.

Please visit my new website http://thecompletetennisguide.blogspot.c... it has all the basic grips and teaches the basic strokes of the game. It will be updated daily.

    Hope This Helps

  2. you can do anything if you put your mind and heart into it.

    good luck!

  3. Practically anyone who can see a ball can play tennis.

If you're athletically inclined, you'll probably do better than those who are not.

Take a few lessons to see if you enjoy it. It will give you a good starting point for you to gauge your interest.

It's a great game that you'll be able to play for the rest of your life.

  4. of course you can, anyone can. you just wont be a GOOD player yet for a while. practice practice practice!

  5. "even though I've never picked up a racquet a day in my life"

Can a 6'5" guy that never picked up a basketball a day in his life make your basketball team.  The short answer...maybe not.  I know a lot of high school tennis players aren't particularly athletic, but you gotta learn how to serve, hit a backhand, etc.  Tennis isn't like basketball and football where physical talent can carry you.  You actually have to learn skills.

Having said that, my buddy in high school was the worst tennis player amongst our friends, just started playing because we did.  But he started taking it seriously, took lessons over the summer and became the only one of us that made varsity.  So you can make it, just start practicing.  Make friends with some tennis players.

  6. of course you can ,  you're slim  and quick enough so yes you can play!

  7. The question is how many hours a week can you devote to the sport and how good is your coach...with the right amount of training, time and money it may be possible...bring a BIG wallet.

  8. Tennis is not as easy as you think.  It takes years of practice to get good at tennis, and I don't think you have a chance.

  9. depends on how good your school tennis team is. with your height and athleticism, you can be a really good player, how long it takes depends on your talent...hard to say

  10. ooo your a point guard on your bball team huh.. well....im a....a...center for the boston celtics....yea...that right....what now, huh, what now son?!?!?!

  11. hmh..well according to my professer here, he says you cant!! tennis is only for pro and a good hearted person likewise youre not. so just be it.play with your game. basketball. dunk like u never dunk!! BELIEVE IT!!

  12. People who are naturally athletic and have excellent hand-eye-coordination can usually pick up new sports much quicker than the average person.  My daughter played softball for 9 years, volleyball for 2 years, track for 4 years, and basketball for 3 years - but when she went to high school she wanted to try something different so she tried out for the tennis team.

She had only had a few drills the weekend before tryouts where I taught her the grips and how to hit the ball.  Well she ended up making the team and even though usually only seniors played in official matches, she played in a match her freshman year!

The key is knowing that tennis is really not a game of power, but one of control.  The first time you return a ball you will know what I mean.  You'll probably hit the ball over the fence! ;-D  Practice hitting the ball with a light touch at first and don't swing upward with the racket - try to swing more parallel to the court to keep the ball inbounds.

Sure, I think you have a chance of making the team, but I'd find a friend who plays to give you a few pointers, teach you the grips, and practice with you at least a little before tryouts.

    Good Luck! :-D

  13. How old are you?

You will never be as good as a player who started since they were 4 or 5.

But if you just want to randomly play tennis sometimes, fine.

  14. you will at least make the jv team. not varsity
