hopefully this week I,ll get my motorcycle but its kinda got me thinking? I have never drove a standard 5 speed car before and from what I hear is that all motorcycles are manuel transmission and to tell you the truth im terrorfied of manuel transmissions cause they sound so complicated, like what speeds and rpm's do I have be in to shift up or down in and I also heard that you have to be careful when you shift down cause shifting down at the wrong speeds and rpm's can cause the rear tire to lock up and I could get in an accident. I dont plan on taking the MSF course, but I really want my motorcycle cause every time im out on the road I see some motorcycle riders and I can almost feel what there feeling, freedom of not being in a box with 4 wheels letting the wind hit you at high speeds, so does anyone have any tips for me? I know I keep posting stuff about motorcycles but I just cant help myself from wanting to know more about them.

  1. It's your choice obviously, but in your situation I would really consider the MSF course.

  2. Manual transmissions are nowhere near as difficult as it sounds.  don't be afraid of it.  Second, I suggest taking the MSF course, it will teach you some things that will help the learning curve and might even save your life.  Statistic for you, greater than 65% of motorcycle accidents are from riders with less than 2 years experience and self taught or a friend taught them.  If you take the MSF course, the statistic goes down to less then 40%.

  3. Since you have decided not to take a safety course it really doesn't matter what you ride what ever happens is all up to you. Probably the rebel it is not much bike so you can not do to much.

  4. You can feel when you need to shift. I've never ridden a street bike, so I don't know about rpms and all that jazz.

Just remember to lay off the throttle and pull in the clutch before you shift. Down shifting at the wrong time could throw you off and make you a bit unstable but I don't think the tire will lock up.

Anyway, if you've never ridden and kind of motorcycle before you really should take a class. You might even get a discount on your insurance.

  5. I think your making a big mistake in not taking the beginning riders course.Getting out on the street without having a clue how to ride a bike is like playing russian roulette. You might live through it and you might not.If your smart you'll go take the course and improve your odds of surviving.I can think of a 100 good reasons to go take the class but not 1 good reason not too.

  6. best thing would be get on a drit bike and practice ,and keep at it ,you dont want a lack of convidence if you intend to go staight out on the road

  7. In my opinion its easier then a car with a one down four up usually with nuetral between first and second you just click it up to go faster you use your ear and feel it.

  9. NO dont listen 2 the c**p about a gearless scooter to learn, i learned on a dirt bike which is the best thing to learn on, always remember to use the cluch,

about the revs, the engine will let u know when to change gear, it is very simple u will pick it up in the matter of an hour

    good luck

  10. You have 3 choices.

    (1) Learn to drive a stick shift then transfer the knowledge to a motorcycle.

    (2) get a large scooter (250cc class) and ride with NO clutch and gear

    (3) learn on YOUR own motorcycle and drop it and crash it few times.

    Good Luck...
