Do you think I would find it difficult as a Male Nurse?

Went to an all boys school, all male friends. Studied engineering at college, worked with mostly guys.

I've never really been interested in having female friends, just girlfriends here and there, And I find it slightly uncomfortable being the only guy in the room!

Yet, all I really want to do is work in Health care.

Well this help me forge a stronger bond with females, or am I just throwing myself into the Lions Den here?

  1. no, there are lots of male nurses- Peter Petrelli of Heroes for one.

  2. Of course you won't have any difficulties.  Female nurses are a thousand times more accepting of male nurses than male doctors are of female doctors, even after 40 years of EEOC.

Nursing is a wonderful career for both men and women.  It that's where you want to be, then go for it and good on ya!

  3. Isn't work supposed to be about the client and not social hour? Why aren't you interested in female friends? Maybe it's more a case of being uncomfortable around them...

If this is what you want to do, it's a great area from what I have heard! Good pay and lots of options!

  4. Go into nursing and don't look back.  I don't know how it is in the rest of the country, but in CA, there is a severe shortage of nurses, and it is an EXTREMELY lucrative profession.  You'll learn to deal with the gender issues as they come, and if you are always professional to patients and co-workers, you shouldn't have a problem.
