  1. Well if NASCAR was still using the old points system Jeff would already have 6 championships under his belt, one from the 2004 season and last season.

Under the new points system it's going to be quite harder for Jeff to reel off 3 championships, but if it was still the old point system, Gordon would easily pass Earnhardt and Petty's 7.

  2. yes he is the best dog

  3. No. He would have had 2 more had the Chase not been put into place, but now I don't think he can do it, but I know better than to count this guy out totally.

  4. no... too many other good drivers...

  5. Yes,he,ll tie with Petty, and Earnhardt...But no one will ever beat 200 wins.....

  6. the argument that he would have 6 titles by now under the old points system is a fallacy.  it pre-supposes that all of the racers, whether in the chase or not, would have raced the exact same way those years whether there was a chase or not. and any decent strategist will tell you, that's not what happened.

when the rules changed to include the chase, so did racing strategies, both for the season and for each race.  right now racers just need to insure that they make the top 12 in order to make the chase, so they adjust their strategies accordingly.  once a driver knows he is in, his strategy changes - he can go all out for the win as he need not worry about falling out of the chase in case of an accident. but a racer who needs to finish, say, in the top 15 at richmond, is going to race more cautiously to insure that he ends up in the top 15, and thus, in the chase.  that changes how the point totals would have come out drastically.

and once the chase begins, the differences in how drivers race those last ten races are much different than they were in the past.

and finally, everybody had the same rules to play by each year. jeff and his team knew them as did everyone else. kurt busch and his team "played the chase" portion of the season better than jeff and jimmie did, and he was rewarded for it.  same thing last year with jimmie johnson. jeff can say it until he is blue in the face, but the old points system isn't in effect, so he didn't win.

and no on 7 championships, he'll make 5 and out.

  7. You have to understand something. Dale Sr won his 7 on the old points system. If that was still in place, Gordon would have 6 right now. So if you compare apples to apples then he only needs one more to match Dale Sr.

  8. Of course he will.

  9. Not under the current points system. Not when there is so much luck involved! The chase  might be the biggest joke ever in sports history! A driver can have the most cumulative points at the end of the season and lose the championship.

#18s #1 fan you could not be more wrong in you analogies!! If anything, there is more emphasis on winning races under the current format, as it's the only way to gain any type of edge on the other drivers. Where as, under the old points system a driver, with a huge points lead like Gordon had in both 2004 and 2007, could coast to a championship by running conservatively and staying out of trouble. Case in point, last year Jimmie Johnson completely dominated the last 10 races and under the old points system, Gordon still wins the championship by a landslide!! He unequivocally and absolutely would have won the championships in those two seasons under the old points system!!

  10. Negative, 5 thats it

  11. jeff gordon will not get any more he is done

  12. No, because he will retire before he gets the chance.  2010 is supposedly his last season, and he would have to win the next three to get 7.  If he kept racing well into his 40s, possibly.

  13. Yes. He's the best driver who has ever lived. He'll finish with 8.

  14. I don't think so.  Just look at the year he has last year.  He had a commanding lead in the points going into the Chase, but couldn't seal the deal.  And I HATE HATE HATE people who keep saying "he's been robbed of two already"...the Chase, like it or not, is the format we are under.  Gordon knew it going in...he wasn't able to close the deal when it counted most.  Everybody is playing with the same rules when it comes to the Chase.

  15. I think 7 is out of reach but i think he can win one more championship before he retires. 2010 he is supposed to make a decision on his racing, possibly running a partial schedule similar to what mark martin is doing now.

  16. No I don't think he will make it. He will retire soon but under the old rules he would have six already !

  17. maybe eventually but not this year

  18. He'll make it to 5 before he retires. I say in 2011 or 2012.

  19. depends on long he keeps racing but I think yes maybe if he sticks with it and doesn't retire in 2010!! Go HMS!!!

  20. No,he will not continue driving long enough to reach that milestone with the amount of new talent in the Cup series and more coming up...especially Logano. To whoever said the Chase took two away from him;that is incorrect. The Chase format was specified and laid out at the beginning of the 2004 season as well as the changes were laid out at the beginning of the 2007 season, so it isn't like they just made a "Gordon Can't Have It" rule and kept him from winning those championships...he deserves the four he has.Kurt Busch(2004),Tony Stewart(2005),and Jimmie Johnson(2006,2007) got the same outline of the rules and played the right game...consistency no longer matters(sorry for dragging that out)lol

  21. Not the way he`s running this year

  22. Not under the current format but he would have already had 6 if NASCAR didn't change to the current format but no matter what, he will still go down in history as one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history

  23. It all depends, on how long he drives, with the competition out there now I doubt it, but it would be nice to see him get atleast one more, but its tougher out there now.. Unless he wants to drive until he gets like Kyle Petty's or Dale Jarrett's age, I doubt it.. He's already said he and Ingrid want more more children, it just depends on what Jeff Gordon wants to do..

    Go Dale Jr & Hms

  24. No,  he will probaBly get to 5.

  25. Well he should have 6 now, but the Chase took 2 away from him.  His time is running out.  But, he has nothing else to prove.

To Jaynarie and others, 2010 is not scheduled to be his last year.  He just signed DuPont thru 2010 but said he plans to race longer than that.

  26. Naw...!!!
