  1. The implementing of witches into the story of the play gives the story a very mystical and magical feel. Unfortunately, we cannot be specific as to whether or not these witches are magical at all, or not. There is never any evidence that these old women are actually casting spells that succeed as opposed to just homeless people throwing disgusting items into boiling water and playing mind games on Macbeth.

The character of Macbeth, like any other human person, has a drive to power. Given the teaser that the witches provided him, he begins to taste a drop of power and experiences a near bloodlust. He becomes impatient waiting for some spell to take place, whether it take place or not, and takes action himself. By killing Banquo, he's already taken the question as to the genuineness of the witches out of the equation and made it clear that he's doing this on his own.

While the witches may have given Macbeth the ideas and motivation, he was the one who actually carried it through and no spell, real or not, would have altered this.
