Motorways can be scary places for newly qualified drivers is it better to have some practice with an instructor or would having learners on the motorway be dangerous. Should it be compulsory, I mean you can avoid ever driving on them if you want. What do you think ? Maybe it might put people off learning to drive ?

  1. I don't think it would put people off, I think it would be a really good idea as motorway driving is scary even for those who've been driving a while!!

  2. YES,YES,YES. People must be taught lane discipline. and how to regulate their speed without constantly stabbing the brake pedal

  3. Motorways are less scary than dual-carriageway A-roads which are also 70mph (in my opinion)

You can drive on A-roads when learning to drive.

  4. Yes - all new drivers should have to follow up with a pass plus motorway course before being allowed on the motorway by themselves.

  5. I really believe it should be compulsory because the first time I went on the motorway I froze. I was so terrified I can't understand how I managed not to cause an accident. It's a completley different ball game to calmly driving around the town and leafy avenues lol. I'd love to see the figures on how many accidents are caused by newly qualified drivers. Saying that I may just be a really c**p driver!!lol

  6. Most instructors already offer this in the UK, It's called *pass plus* and can help lower the insurance premium.

  7. Thats waht the fun with passing your driving test is. You realise you have only just started learning when you pass.

  8. Yes, absolutely.

I also think that new drivers should be limited to cars below a certain power to weight ratio.

  9. I do not believe it is necessary because the same conditions apply on any busy dual carriageway.  If you can drive on a busy dual carriageway, you can drive on a motorway.  In some ways, motorways are safer because there are no learners and because drivers who lack the confidence to use them properly sometimes avoid them.

I think there should be more in depth questions about motorways in the driving test, especially about joining/leaving the motorway and about lane discipline but I definitely do not ever want to see a learner driver on a motorway.

  10. they should make the pass plus course compulsory to gain your full licence, as this will give the less experienced driver an insight as to how you need to drive on the motorway

  11. yeah it should be compulsary because you drive along dual carriageways on lessons which i think are the same speed limit the only reason they dont do it is because driving is a rip off and they try and make people pay to take the motorway test after motorways i think are the safest roads

  12. Sure, I agree with you 100% but at the same time it all boils down to money and if they try and enforce this, the price will go up thus leading to a lost in money.

  13. I think it should definately be compulsory.

There is something called pass plus which if you do it, lowers your insurance premium with some companies. But it isnt compulsory and it costs more so a lot of people don't bother.

It should be included in the proice of the driving lesson and in fairness a couple of lessons should be enough to give confidence and ability after the test.

  14. Totally agree..It also takes the pressure of the learner driver that he has control of the car without changing gears and you will gain confidence on the motorway..

The only stipulation is that a learner wouldnt be on the motorway from 6.30 am to 10 am and the hours of say 3.30 till 7.00 pm. which would be the busy time..

  15. I would prefer to see newly qualified drivers take a motorway test, rather than let learners loose before passing.

Motorways can be scary places, even for us experienced drivers sometimes.

  16. no

  17. Learning to drive on a motorway should be part of the training course.

It is acknowledged that motorways are dangerous places to drive on since learner drivers are not allowed to drive on a motorway, even though they have an instructor beside them.

But once they've passed the test, they're automatically allowed to.  There's nothing new they would have learnt that gives them the ability to drive on the motorway.

  18. whats you talkin bout philip!

  19. As it stands it is ILLEGAL for learner drivers to go on the motorway even with a qualified driving instructors.

When you first pass your test most Driving Schools with offer you a paid lesson on a Motorway.
