  1. I think many people in many countries of the world deserve better living standards than they have. I have visited Nicaragua and the poverty there is evident, particularly in Managua and the countryside. The Government has little money, it did not get proportionate compensation from the US authorities for the civil war that it sponsored back in the 80s and it will again get less aid now as iconic Sandinista leader, Daniel Ortega has recently been re-elected by his people fed up with a succession of right wing governments that only care for the rich.

I am sure Ortega will try to do what he can to build on the previous achievements of the Sandinistas and redistribute wealth but he has a hard job and a huge enemy in George Bush et al. I fear the poor in Nicaragua is in much of the world will be loosers whilst those of us in the west agonise over the coolest model of mobile phone and whether to holiday in the South of France or Italian Rivera on the profits made from our latest share dealing.

In conclusion, yes the people in Nicaragua who live in poverty deserve better just as they do in many other equally poor or poorer nations. It is sick that we could all live in comfort and dignity if some of the worlds riches where redistributed.

  2. Obviously, the answer is yes.  My husband is originally from Managua and his grandmother lives in Tipitapa.  She has a very poor house, but it is nice compared to many, which is quite sad.

The new government under Ortega is not going to do anything to help the people.  But the people that were in power since Ortega's last time as President have done absolutely nothing either.  My husband says people lived so much better under Somoza.  That was when his family had land and some money.  But when the war occurred, they took everything from them.

Nicaragua needs a government that is really concerned about the people.  And they need financial support from other nations.  Also, the people who *do* have money have to think about their nation as a whole, not just themselves.  But that generally doesn't happen in most Latin American countries where there's a small very rich population, absolutely no middle class, and then a huge poor population.

The country needs a middle class in order to become successful.

  3. Of Course! But whose fault is it to have 10 people living in a 1 room dirt floor shack. Where is the money going to come from for this to happen
