I know right now that all these olympians are super famous like shawn Johnson, Nastia Luikin, Usain Bolt, and Michael Phelps, but do you think eventually they will be forgotten? And im not talking about in 100 years, im talking about in 8-16 years. I would say that by the 2024 olympic games, these four champs will be almost forgotten. Look what happened to Mark Spitz, held a world record for a long time, and now days many people are like "Who's Mark Spitz?". Usain bolt and Michael Phelps might last a little longer because of the records they set. Does anyone else agree, or am i just rambling about something that hasnt and wont happen?

  1. Maybe or maybe not.

Jesse Owens is a name that people will not forget. He was a significant figure and he made history not just in sports but what he showed through the devil's eyes Adolf Hitler is a remarkable thing that no one will ever achieve in a lifetime.

  2. Not all of them, but some may be.

  3. I dont think anyone will be able to forget phelps for a long time, I remembered him from when he was 15, but seriously, 8 golds...in one olympic session, thats gonna be ahrd for me to forget

  4. Yes they do become forgotten, as do many members of teams that play popular sports that are played regularly. I guess it all boils down tot he fact that there are a lot of spoting events covered in the Olympics and some of them are sports that dont get a lot of television coverage unless it is the Olympic Games which means we only see them every four years and four years is a very long time in an athletes career. I dont think that people like Micheal Phelps will be forgotten in a hurry though because that was such a feat and with the amount of athletes endorsements today, he will remain in the public eye.

  5. It takes someone very special to be remembered from the Olympics is the mass public.  Personally, since I dont follow the Olympics the only people I truly remember are:

Jesse Owens, legendary figure because he was black and played in front of Hitler

Mark Spitz, cause he held the record in swimming

Mary Lou Retton, all over the place after 1984

Bruce Jenner, all over the place after his Olympic feats

Marion Jones, mainly now because of her doping

    Jackie Joyner-Kersey

    Florence Griffith Joyner

    Edwin Moses

Mary Decker, runner who got knocked out by the South African Zola Budd

    Bonnie Blair, speedskater from Illinois

Picaboo Street, how can you forget the name

    Tanya Harding

    Nancy Kerrigan

I dont include the Dream Team in Mens Basketball or the Womens BB teams, nor do I include the pro tennis players, or the baseball players because many of them are already known or go onto being names in their sports not because of the Olympics.

  6. They won't be forgotten per se, but people will lose interest in them. Kind of sad too. In a few weeks, months, who will I have to talk about Michael Phelps with? Hahaha. But regarding Mark Spitz, he won his medals in 1972. A lot of us weren't born yet which is why many don't know who he is. Even though people lose interest, you can never take away what an athlete has accomplished at the Olympics. Their names will forever be held in the record books. :)

  7. Everyone remembers the events that made a huge impression on them. For example, I can't forget watching Donovan Bailey's 9.84 World Record in Atlanta '96 when I was a little kid. Maybe the average viewer doesn't know who Donovan Bailey is, but it was an event that impressed me a lot.

Real sports fans don't forget about the most important champions. If the general people ask "Who's Mark Spitz?" is because they know nothing about the Olympics, so the same kind of people will probably ask "Who is Michael Phelps?" in 20 or 30 years.

  8. Unfortunately, most will be forgotten. There will be exceptions like Spitz, Phelps, Thorpe (both), Jesse Owen, Emile Zatapec, Nadia Comaneci. Names like these will not be forgotten in Olympic history.

***Anankin, I don't know if you aware of it or not but there were other people involved in the Olympics besides Americans.

  9. Shawn Johnson will be forgotten by all of the guys that just like her because she's cute and doesn't understand what gymnasts have to do to get to the Olympics. I don't exactly think Phelps can be forgotten. And Bolt will be remembered in Jamaica, no doubt, but I don't know about the rest of the world.

  10. No the outstanding ones will remain in out memory if not because we remember than because the TV will continue to remind us.

Michael Phelps has done something that deserves the place he will get in American and Australian memory for a long time to come.

For us Australians Phelps may not be the memory we wanted but none the less we will respect him.    Bloody yanks!

  11. time dilutes all hype

  12. i definitly think some are going to be forgotten. the ones who wont will be the ones talked about the most lkie Michael Phelps. I probably will forget all the gymnasts because i'm not all that interested in them. As a general rule i think people will forget the ones who weren't anything special even if at the time they were number one in the world.

  13. Only the exceptional ones are not forgotten by the general public. And after enough years, they are forgotten just cause people who remember them die off. If Phelps hadn't gone for Mark Spitz record, most people not old enough would say 'Mark who?'
