  1. NOT A CHANCE!  Jose Reyes doesn't have a high enough on base percentage to climb the list of all time base stealers.  Plus, as people have said above, "the game of baseball is played differently now as apposed to 20 + years ago.

  2. All records were made to be broken, the one who brakes this record may not have been born yet, hey could be you.

  3. No way.  130 SB in a season and 1406 SB's are records that will stand until MLB makes a major change to decrease the ability of the hitters to hit the home run.

    1. When Henderson played, there was no such thing as a pitcher taking a "slide-step".   Now, pitchers regularly are timed on their releases to minimize the ability of the base stealer to steal off the pitcher.  Add the ability of video, and teams will never allow their pitchers to be slow to the plate.

    2. The Billy Beane phenomenon has further devalued the stolen base.  The risk is too great for the Moneyball! followers.

    3. Henderson played for 25 years.  Speed players are speedy for only a short amount of time.  Henderson was a freak of nature that stole bases well into his 40s.  He stole 20 bases for 23 consecutive years!!!

    4. Not only was he fast, but he had a terrific OBP and had the career walks record when he retired.

  4. no, its like joe dimaggio's consecutive hit record..... it just wont happen.

  5. lol ...... lordy !!!!!!!!!! Reyes ???? Ellsbury ????? spare me.  Rickys stolen base records will NEVER be broken, never.  Reyes had 70 stolen bases in a season, whoopie.  hes still 60 stolen bases short of Rickys single season record.  his career stolen base total will be standing 100 years from now ..... 1406.  one THOUSAND four hundred and six.  thats an AVERAGE of 70 stolen bases a year for TWENTY years.  people who said Reyes or Ellsbury clearly never saw Ricky play.  anybody who saw Ricky play knows he was a freak of nature.

Ricky is the all time stolen base king, and he always will be.

  6. All records are meant to be broken but this one will not be for sometime.  Teams now are not relying on the stolen base as much as they were in the 80s and 90s. henderson did it at the right time in history.

  7. Practically every baseball record can be broken - someday. We have no way of knowing how the game will evolve in the future, ways which may make some seemingless unreachable records attainable.

That being said, I don't imagine any current player will approach either Henderson's single season or career stolen base record. There may be a 5 year old out there who has that in his future. We'll have to wait and see.

  8. yea jose reyes

  9. Ultimately both the season and lifetime records will fall, but not by anyone currently active in the Bigs. Whoever does it will have to be as big of a freak of nature as Henderson was, in a good way. First he'd have to have a high on base %. Then he'd have to learn more pitchers' moves than Henderson did. He would have to keep his legs well conditioned and healthy enough to play for 20+ years. One stint on the DL for a leg injury could be enough to ruin his chances of breaking either one of the two records. Like many records, this one is said to be unbreakable. As fun as it is to watch someone break the unbreakable records, I think these will stand for a couple more decades before we see anyone make a strong, legitimate run at them. No pun intended.

  10. I do not think any of his records will be broken.

It's more of a power game now.

    1270 career sbs

A player would have to avg 120 a yr for 10 yrs to do that.

  11. It will never happen.  managers are all Earl weavers, get on base and wait for the three run hr

  12. Single season - no.

    Career - no

The career one is fairly easy because he beat the incumbant by 50% or so.

In the single season, you have to have a great batting eye (which doesn't look great on contracts) have patient hitters behind him to let him steal, have coaches/managers that can let them fail 20% of the time to let them succeed 80% and you have to ignore all those math geeks that suggest that stealing a base is a negative contributor.

Plus, with the smaller fields and the greater reliance on power, until the HR starts to decline, there is no real reason for the SB to increase.

  13. I think that it WILL be broken one day, and if by anyone, it would be Jose Reyes. Last season, he broke the Mets single season stolen bases record, and if he keeps this up, I think he has a great chance of breaking it.

  14. Well, I would have to agree that Reyes probably would be the guy of choice in this category. However, there is no way he will break it in my opinion. Jose would have to steal at least 80 bases a year for fifteen straight years (making him 40 years old), in order to accomplish this feat. Doesn't sound too bad right? Wrong, he went crazy last year in stolen bases and only piled up 78 of them. The only thing that could help his chances more would be for him to get on base more, whether through hits or walks. However, I just don't see this happening. Jacoby Ellsbury is a great stealer as well, but he is only 2 months younger than Reyes and is already 225 SB's away. That pushes him out already in my mind. However, he is only hitting .264 this year with a .327 on base percentage, and has somehow been able to squeeze out 41 stolen bases, the same as Reyes. So, that is very impressive, but he won't ever have a great OBP, and is already behind due to starting his career at age 24. As far as single season, I am pretty sure that one is safe at least in this era of baseball. Maybe some crazy fast kid will come along and be fortunate enough to play for a manager who loves to move runners, but I don't see that happening in the near future. Just my opinion though.

  15. I don't think so. Guys just don't steal bases like hendu, rock or vince any more. When was the last time a guy even got close to 100 steals in a season?? I think of it off the top of my head but its been a looooong time.

I agree that Reyes could do it if he could stay healthy and have a higher OB%. If Ellsbury could play like he is hyped to be he could have a shot also. The kid is Super-Fast!!! I've never seen anyone score from 2nd base on a wild pitch before, but he has!!!

  16. I like Jose Reyes, but I don't think he'll do it.

He needs roughly 1200 more steals to break Rickey's record. If he averages 60 per year for 20 years, he will have to play until he's 45 to get it done....I don't think so.

  17. No. Jose Reyes will not break. He is 25 and really fast but he can not get 1400 stolen bases in a career. No. It will happen though eventually but not by Jose Reyes. Reyes has 275 stolen bases in 6 seasons

  18. Hmmm.. maybe, but I'm going to have to say Jacoby Ellsbury could break it. He's got 40 stolen bases I think and he's leading in steals in the AL.
