I have got a feeling he might be one of those who retires early, like Justine Henin.

Opinions?

  1. I guess we do not have to take this question seriously..

Federer will not retire because he did not win one of the two majors in 2008!! If you compare this 2008 results with Sampras' results in the years he was n.1 you can clearly see Feder was way better! We are just not used to see Feder as a human world n.1 !!

  2. I really don't think so, one bed year is not something that can put Federer's mind of RG, I am pretty sure he will try again next year. And even if he lose his no1 spot he won't be just one of the good players as someone said, he will still be the legend , the guy to beat. Sampras came to Wimbledon in 2000 as no 3/4 i think and he still was the favorite and won it...And he did won one more US open 2 years later, he was the no1 for 6 years and loosing rankings didn't make him to retire, I really don't see why would that make Federer retire early..

Thanks for thumbs up, but I just gave Sampras example since he is the most similar player ( not in terms of play, more in terms of career, meaning he wasn't no1 but he was always favorite on grass ) to Federer for me. I would be really disappointed in Federer if he gives up just because he is not number one in the world. Maybe because he is really my favorite player of all times and I have such a high expectations from him ( both on and off court). I still see him as favorite at Wimbledon, but maybe I am just not objective here, since I really, really admire him. And I really hope/think he can swallow his pride and go on even if not no1 in the world. Tennis would lose a lot with him retire early, just because he is not no1 in my opinion though.

  3. I think he might retire earlier than most, but I would guess that he'll do it closer to 30.  His slump reminds me of the downward slide that Sampras started in '98-'99.  He was still winning Wimbledon, but the other majors were slipping away together with the rankings.  Sampras was also Federer's age at that time, which is why I'm seeing a lot of resemblance in their career paths.

  4. Not until he finally wins the French Open.

  5. i dont think so. not before 28. i just have a feeling that he's not that kind. plus, he still needs the french open. so i dare say he'll give it at least 2 more times, unless of course, he's bogged down by injury and has to retire early.

  6. I don't think Federer will retire earlier. He is a maricle of tennis world,it was only a temporary state last,I believe it won't affect his future development. He is always the greatest player in tennis. He retired tennis altar will be a great pity.I've bought a similar shoes at www.dunksb-king.com to commemorate him.

  7. h**l play till hes 35.. he did say idloizes agassi long career

  8. I don't think he will for another two years or so just because of the fact that he hasn't won the French Open. He'll probably give it another bash. Although, Justine Henin didn't win as many Grand Slams as Federer. Federer wants to be known as The Greatest Tennis Player ever. Federer needs to stay playing if he wants to achieve that!

  9. Well when Justine retired I remember that Roger said something like "It's a shame for tennis when the No.1 player announces her retirement out of the blue... I can't imagine just saying goodbye. That wouldn't be my thing. I feel I still have so much ahead of me and so many possibilities in tennis. I just love the sport. It would break my heart to stop."

That wouldn't be his thing, he said. But then again we never know. But Roger said that he'll be playing till he's in his 30s, but who knows? I remember that like a week or 2 before her retirement, Justine said something like 'Maybe I'll retire but maybe in 2 or 5 years time. blablabla' but then she suddenly retiredddd urgh.

Let's just hope Roger doesn't retire. If he does, aaah tennis will be..... boring. Hmm

  10. He has said that he won't, that he wants to on to 35 years old.  So if he can get used to not being no 1 that much as the years go on, I think he'll be around a while. Unless he had a massive drop in form or bad injury problems.

  11. He is still playing like a champion n he work hard on his fitness too.Only injury can stop him before 4-5 years.I really dont know when he will retire but be sure about one thing..............till his retirement,he will won at least 20 grand slams.

  12. Yes I think he will retire early. In fact my prediction is that he'll retire after losing wimbledon in a month from now.

People say he has a lot of tennis left in him, which is true. But what they don't understand is that after winning 12 grand slams and being #1 for nearly 300 weeks, you can't go back to being just another good player. Reaching semis of grand slams and failing to win titles is not going to cut it. Once it is clear that he can't win grand slams anymore, Federer is going to throw in the towel. I believe losing his wimbledon title to his rival Rafa will finally convince him of that.

Yes just like Jusine. Exactly like Justine. Borg also retired early. Once it was clear to him that Mcenroe was consistently beating him in grandslams, that was it. And I have to say that Federer no longer enjoys being out there competing. He gets frustrated when he can't put away his opponents fast. He wants to win, but he doesn't want to work for it. I've noticed that since Dubai last year. A  year and a half later, and it is getting worse. Yes his die hard fans will thumbs me down (they are such gangsters). But it is true. Maybe they'll agree with me in 1 month from now.

    *EDIT*

Thank you Bea for your response (I gave you a thumb up). But I respectfully disagree. It was different with Sampras. He was on and off the number one ranked player. He ENDED the year as #1 six times in a row. He didn't dominate the way Roger has, so it wasn't a big deal for him to keep on playing when his ranking dropped. For Sampras, he always believed he could win Wimbledon and that is why he kept on playing. It is also why he didn't come back in 2003. Federer is different because of the expanse of his dominance. If he was born in fire, how could he live in smoke.

  13. no

  14. Probably, he wont like to get to the point of not being the best, (there will always be someone better) and lets face it he'll never be short of a bob or two

  15. i think so his game has gone slightly down hill and there are a lot of younger fitter players coming up the rankings now and i think that he will struggle even more.

  16. I dont think so because he is a very good tennis player and I think he still has good career ahead of him!
