Do you think Shivnarine Chanderpaul can pass the 10,000 run mark in Tests?

He currently has 8001 runs and will turn 34 on August 16. If he plays for another 3 to 3.5 years, will he score at least 2000 more? If he does, should he possibly be considered a better batsman than the likes of Desmond Haynes, Carl Hooper and Brian Lara?

  1. yes

  2. West Indies need Shiv to keep playing, so he is guarenteed his spot for another (dare i say 4) years.

I read a statistic that showed the leading players for the year 2008 in Test cricket. Chanderpaul was high in the list and had an average of 100 for the year 2008. Considering that Chanderpaul had a golden 2007 as well, it looks like Chanderpaul is in the form of his life.

I believe that since Lara retired, the West Indies rely on Chandepaul and Sarwan to make the majority of there runs, well since Chanderpaul has been relied upon, he has scored runs in every series and he has been almost impossible to get out, my point is that Chanderpaul plays best when he is under pressure to score runs.

Chanderpaul on current form will definitely break the 10,000 runs barries (he could almost reach 11,000) He will score 1,000 runs in the next 2 years definitely

Even if this happens he wont be renowned as the greatest West Indies batsmen of all time. For some peculiar reason some great players never seem to catch the public-eye like other players do. I recently did a question about Shaun Pollock and the fact that he had better stats than the great Ian Botham and that should he be held as high as Beefy was.

Chanderpaul is the same, he has gone through his career without ever being the star, thats why Viv Richards & Brian Lara will always be thought of as the 2 greatest.

  3. I do not think he will be able to complete 10000 ruins in test cricket.

Even if he completes 10000 runs, he can never be compared with Brian Lara.

  4. Yes i believe he has another good 3-4 years of International cricket in him,and yes i think he can reach 10,000..

    He is a great batsman.

  5. no - i think he will get 9,999 lool jkes - nahh e'll do it in 3 years - and then retire

  6. IMO, he is the 66th all-time best batsman of the world whereas Lara is the 4th all-time best test match batsman. Let him reach Lara's level first by crossing great west indian batsmen like Frank Worrell, Gordon Greenidge, Seymour Nourse, Clyde Walcott, Vivian Richards, Richie Richardson, Gary Sobers, Everton Weekes and then Brian Lara. He is certainly a better batsman than Desmond Haynes and Carl Hooper but not Lara. He may cross 10,000 runs certainly by the time he retires. He scores about 72 runs per match on an average. It will mean that he has to play 28 more matches to reach the milestone. It will mean 140 test matches in his career. He will be around 37-38 years by then and can call off after reaching the 10,000 run mark.

Suddenly he appears to find a great form for himself. Shiv has a lot of fans and admirers all over the world. I still remember how fondly Clive Lloyd talked of him. West Indies cricket needs more such players.

  7. he could. but he will be consider equal to one or two of them.. he will be one of the best of WI ever

  8. Possibly, if he plays for long enough, and maintains his form.

As to whether he can be considered a better batsman than Haynes, Lara, Hooper....he is certainly not better than Lara, Haynes was an outstanding player who batted at the top of the order, so I wouldn't regard him as being "better" than them.

Chanderpaul is a quality act, but he is not in the highest echelon of West Indian batsman. I would place him in the second tier. I think he is standing out more because the rest of the team is so poor. If he was in the same team as Richards, Lloyd, Lara, Greenidge, Haynes, then he would not stand out so much.

Chanderpaul is a player to be respected, but he does not command reverence in the way  Richards and Lara do.
