  1. Yes. that is one fine contrast ratio there. Keep in mind this is likely a "dynamic" contrast ratio (I'm guessing a Samsung). To establish the fixed Contrast ratio divide by 5 which would make the fixed ratio 5000:1. Still very respectable stat there.

That is a good number for dynamic contrast, but static contrast is even more important.  Check the specs: it should be better than 5,000:1.  While contrast ratio numbers are meaningless from the point of view of describing picture quality (the conditions under which the measurement is made are not realistic), all manufacturers uses essentially the same method, so the numbers are useful for comparison.

    Above being said, other things beside contrast are important to picture quality.  Do not select on that parameter only.  You should try to see the picture the set makes, or read more comprehensive reviews (such as on CNet).
