My new house has a Chambers built in oven and range top that were installed in 1954 and have been used since. They appear to be fully functional. Do you think they are safe to continue to use?

  1. I'd think they're safe if they work. If something stops working on them, then it's time to get it checked out. It would have been helpful if the home inspector had said why he thought they should be replaced. Perhaps you could get him to elaborate on that, or get an electrician to check them out if you are really worried. It could be fairly expensive to replace them if they're built in. Those older appliances were very well built. I had an older electric stove(late 1940s or early 1950s) that I moved from one house to another. I have since moved from that house but see that the people I sold it to have listed it again after extensive remodelling, but my old stove is still there so it must be working fine.

  2. Why not have them inspected just to clear any doubts? My relatives still use a cooking chamber that dates back from the 1940's. It's been in our family for generations.

  3. I would think they should be ok. If in doubt, get them checked but keep if you can.

  4. Not only safe, but MUCH better built than the mass-market stuff sold today.  If you replaced this with a new Kenmore, for instance, you'd be trading a Deusenberg for a Chevy.

  5. no
