Do you think a Cultural Anthropology class should be mandatory?

In public schools? I only wish that it was for me. It took too long for me to have an open mind. I've always been tolerant of other cultures, beliefs and lifestyles, but appreciating them didn't come into play until college. I think if it was mandatory curriculum, we'd have a lot of kids much better prepared for our melting pot of a society.

  1. No, I don't believe any class should be absolutely mandatory. I think college should be a time where you should have the freedom to explore your interests and yes, learn. That said I think taking a cultural anthropology class would really help young people to see the world in a greater perspective and have more tolerance for others...

Oh, you meant earlier in education..like grade-high school? Still no, kids these days need to learn to read, write and do math first.

  2. That would be Nice, but I'd like to see them graduating with the ability to read, write and do basic math.

  3. No. Cultural anthropology is an incoherent, ideological mess. You can learn and become tolerant of other societies without the political correctness demanded in social science.

  4. no, it could be optional, but not mandatory.

  5. I would have to agree.  True, the 3 R's (as they use to be called) are more important;  but in school districts where that is not a problem, I think they should incorporate it into the Social Studies programs of secondary schools for sure.  They could even introduce it a bit into the elementary level.

I personally was very lucky to grow up in a good school district.  The vast majority of those that went to school, learned the 3 R's and by high school had room and were required to take so much Social Studies anyway.  There was plenty of room for such a course.
