Do you think a restaurant dedicated to good old fashioned Maltese cuisine in Melbourne Australia would work?

There are so many maltese living in Victoria and I would like to see it happen one day.

I want to know your suggestions as to what you would like to see on the menu and how far you would travel to eat there!

  1. Honestly , No , dont take it offensively , but i dont think there is as many Maltese population in Melbourne in comparison to other , thats the thing , sure theres alot of ITALIAN restaurant on Lygon , and maybe a Maltese would go well at the start. I just dont think would. Sorry

  2. We don't already have any Maltese restaurants??? OMG!!!  You'd better hurry up and organise one to open.  Imagine that... a cuisine that isn't represented in Melbourne.

Obviously, the best place for the first purely Maltese restaurant would be in the inner city area; from Carlton (in the north) to St Kilda (in the south).  People will travel to the inner city for a great restaurant, but will rarely travel to the outer 'burbs (no matter how good the food is).  Somewhere along the promenade in Southbank would be brilliant - but the rent could be a hurdle.

I'd suggest Fitzroy Street over Lygon Street.  There's more diversity in Fitzroy Street, so you're more likely to get 'passing' traffic.  Whereas people go to Lygon Street for Italian; Little Bourke Street for Chinese; Lonsdale Street for Greek -- and therefore have (pretty much) already made-up their mind as to what style of cuisine they're after.

Apart from pastizzi (which I LOVE), I really don't know that much about Maltese cuisine... so it would be an adventure.  And I'm always up for a new cultural experience.

  3. your market needs to be bigger or appeal to more than the Maltese- not only Italians eat Italian food, if your product is good and fresh and your service is good then I'm sure it would work. The Moroccan soup bar in north Fitzroy works and so does the Afghan gallery, do a little bit of research and I'm sure it will be a hit

  4. Definately! I was just in Melb the other weekend and I did Lygon with hundreds of Italian places lining the street. Some Maltese would go down well there!

  5. no

  6. It's not specifically Maltese, but there's already the Bedouin Kitchen in St Kilda.

It's been around for ages, so it must be reasonably successful.
