  1. not  sure if they teach you the business end of catering but it is a dog eat dog world in that area.how many caterers are there in the city, town you're in?Is there a need? do you have something different than everybody else? what is the average price people will pay for what events? How many people can you cool for? what kind of employees will you have and what kind of taxes do you need to pay for them? What are your Best sources of advertisement in the area and how much will that cost you?do you have all the equipment do you have? And what kind of kitchen will you be cooking in?(you can rent kitchen in some areas)  you can't cook in your home.there's alot to think about and simply being able to cook is not enough. You should start out at a country club and get to be known for what you do,meet the peole who can make or break your business.remember, It's not who you are it's who you know.

  2. No. You should have at least a year's hands on experience with a business like that before you open it so you can be fully aware of all of the equipment and expenses involved with it.  Before doing a venture like that, you should have a list of every piece of equipment you would need and how much it would cost.  This is called a "breakdown"  Then figure out what your fixed expenses would be like and how much you would need to break even.  There are often free workshops in some town to help people plan a business.

Culinary schools are very pricey and you would do better to learn on the job anyways.

  3. I studied culinary arts in the late 70's but i dont think I would have been quite ready to start my own business right out of school. However if you have someone that can work with you to help and you ae willing to start out slowly you can probably pull it off

  4. Go to school for journalism and work in a restaurant to support yourself.  You will learn both trades and be ready for anything.

    Good Luck!
