Question:

Do you think a salary cap is a good idea in MLB?

Every year it's the same team (New York, New York, Red Sox, Dodgers). Occasionally a 'wild card' such as Colorado or Tampa Bay does well, but not often.

  1. well if there isn't a salary cap then its just like using play money and people get millions on top of millions and it just wouldn't be worth it

  2. I think it would be great.  No longer would teams be able to buy every powerhouse player on the market.  It would force teams to actually become better as a whole team rather than hoping there star players with their imaculate individual skill carry the team.

  3. Yes, the teams that you said are always in the playoffs are the highest paying teams. Those teams wouldn't be anything without their Delgados A-Rods Ortiz's and Nomars. A team that would benefit a lot is the Twins. They have a very low payroll yet they can perform.

  4. I think more important would be a salary minimum.  Teams like the Royals, Pirates, A's, Marlins, etc are rarely going to compete because they don't pay enough to keep their players.  Right now with revenue sharing the owners of these low salary teams are lining their own pockets.  There should be more revenue sharing so they have money to pay out and there would probably need to be a higher luxery tax so teams like the Yankees and Red Sox can pay high salaries if they want, they'll just be penalized for it.

  5. No It would be a disaster.  You'd have to start offering signing bonuses because their couldn't be no guaranteed money. What would be a max contract?  Injuries are more prevalent in a 162 game season plus you add in spring training and playoffs for 8 teams.

The Marlins have won 2 WS in the past ten years. The Twins and Athletics have made numerous playoff appearances and have been very competitive over the past several years and Rays have a great chance of making the playoffs.

The owners wouldn't go for it because they couldn't be justified in raising prices and therefore increasing revenue.

In most cases, some owners are just cheap, like KC and Minnesota. But at least Minnesota has a great farm system and scouting dept.

  6. i think it wouldn't be a bad idea, but the way the revenue sharing system works is fine...look at teams like the twins and a's, who have consistently done well despite being small market franchises, there is something to be said for the system that is currently in place...so while i don't think it would be a bad idea it's probably not all that necessary

  7. I think it's definitely a problem when A-Rod is making more this year than the entire Marlins payroll. But at the same time, money doesn't automatically make you a winning ballclub. Look at the Tigers this year...
