Do you think after a certain age, older people should have to retake their driving test? Both maneuverability and the on-the-road test?

And don't just think I'm discriminating against old people. I think this would be a good idea for teenagers. Every five years or so I think we should have to retake our test.

I'm 18, and I hate riding in the car with my friends because they all drive like maniacs, but older people probably cause a lot of accidents too. As much as they think they're being safe by going 35 on a road that's 55, that's not safe at all.

Opinions?!

  1. Among licensed drivers, young people between the ages of 15 and 20 have the highest rate of fatal crashes relative to other age groups, including the elderly.

In fact, the risk of being involved in a fatal crash for teens is three times greater than for drivers age 65 to 69.

  2. Kids are stupid morons on the roads.  Oldsters are slow and annoying.  Basically ban anyone who drives a Honda or people with outsized wheels and the world would be a better place

  3. All drivers should be re-tested-often, but it doesn't happen.

  4. Young people should be spied on..there not safe drivin =D

  5. I agree I love my grandmother and thats why I say this I'm so afraid of that phone call one day that shes had a wreck. She's a horrible driver now and she does'nt even know it. I won't let my kids ride with her cause I want them home in one piece. I say this not to be rude but its to protect them and everyone else .......just as no drunk drivers

  6. i agree IF you include all SUV drivers and 'new' citizens.

  7. I think that BEFORE a certain age, drivers should be tested as often as every year, since statistics show that it is YOUNGER people that are responsible for most collisions.

AFTER a certain age, I would suggest that retesting be connected to driving records, rather than an arbitray age.

BTW, people going 35 in a 55 zone CAN get a ticket for unsafe driving.

Check the reports put out by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and the American Automobile Association Foundation.

  8. Yes.... YES!!!!

This one old lady was going 7MPH on the freeway!!! She was looking kind of zoned out like she didn't even know she was alive or something.

  9. i do think bot the elderly and teens should have to retake the drivers test every few years. teens for the obvious reasons you gave, but the elderly especially b/c i mean ur eyesight changes and some have dementia or Alzheimer's and may not have someone in their lives to stop them from driving. i thin k it's a good idea. look at that guy a few yrs ago that killed a/b 5 people and injured many others in california. it's very sad.

  10. The idea sounds ok but it would need to be backed by data to show it is non -discriminatory. There is some-where out there data of accidents and it would have the ages listed. But from what I have read and seen the most accidents that older people are involved in are sitting at an intersection for a long time then just pull into traffic. So think it would be harder to prove the slow driver effect with statistics.
