  1. think it depends on the species. I have White-footed Ants (Technomyrmex albipes) that come to live in my kitchen every winter and they, unlike the Argentine Ant, certainly appear to enter a dormant state very like sleep. In the morning one finds little groups of them on the countertop or, more often, under the breadboard or a plate, or in the waterjug (they have a great affinity for water) -- all still and apparently sleeping. One has to nudge them or tap sharply near them before they all come to life and run around in a bit of a panic. So yes, I would say that some ants sleep.


  2. Yes, I read that ants sleep in very short naps. I know grasshoppers roost at night. Flies also.
