  1. After working for one I can tell you most definately not.  Insurance companies do a balancing act everyday of guessing what claims payouts might be and then hoping they have enough money to cover them.  If they don't raise premiums then they go bankrupt, and you're shopping for new insurance, which might be higher than what you were paying before.  If you're with a stock company then they are owned by shareholders who expect profits.  Mutual companies (basically anything with "mutual" in the name) are "owned" by the policyholders, who sometimes gt dividends back from the company in years when claims are lower than expected.  To avoid the profit monster try sticking with mutual companies.  This won't make you immune to rate increases though.

  2. No. It may raise premiums but only because it means they have to pay out. We don't like accidents. On a smaller scale (I work in an insurance office) it means more work and lowers profitability scores for agents. If you have an agent who cares, like in a small town, who  knows their clients it adds another reason not to like bad roads, etc. We'd rather have clients who pay their insurance and never get in accidents. :-)
