I was watching the news today and is said that the world should expect more disasters like tornadoes and cyclones because of global warming.

Since the hardest hit areas of these disasters are poor nations like Burma and Thailand who normally cannot shoulder the cost of rebuilding and food aid should high emitters like The United States and China be held fiscally responsible ?

  1. The link between global warming and increased tornadoes, cyclones, and hurricanes is still uncertain among climate scientists.  Some studies indicate a connection and other studies don't.  While National Geographic is generally a very good popular magazine, it doesn't always keep up with the latest in scientific research.  For that you'd need to read peer reviewed scientific journals like Nature, Journal of Climate, etc.

Nonetheless, even if storms aren't a direct result of global warming, many other challenges will be.  And there is a certain moral responsibility of those nations creating most of the global warming to help other nations. This help needn't be mere handouts, but technological help and partnership efforts would be good.

  2. No.  The more co2, the less likely there is to be hurricanes.

At this rate Hurricanes will be extinct by 2050.

[Edit]  Yep - Global Warming is a Subjective Science.  It all depends on who you choose to believe.  I rather wait until there's objective facts about the climate.

  3. No.  You shouldn't believe what journalists tell you about science.  They generally no less than nothing.  It will be a sad day when we give up our sovereignty to third world thugs and dictatorships but that is what people who preach this sort of thing are actually advocating.  Most of the world does not have our interest at heart.

Actually, national geographic is wrong.  Increased temperature (especially air), may reduce temperature gradients.  If it were the water that warmed, it might cause larger storms, but the water warms much more slowly than the air.  The global climate is more complicated than that.  It is ignorant predictions of gloom and doom that do more harm.  Why don't you aim some of your arrows at those who deserves it such as the leftist regime in Myanmar.
