  1. To be fair I would say no.  It would be great for an African nation or more likely a group of african nations to host the games but in the foreseable future Ethiopia simply isn't going to have the infrastructure or technical expertise to hold such a large event.  The entire cost would have to be provided from outside as well as much of the skilled labour to build the facilities.  It would have one benefit in that it would provide the local people with many opportunities to learn new skills.

  2. I'm not quite sure about Ethiopia but having the Olympics in Africa would be nice.

  3. Definitely not. The country has massive economic troubles, civil unrest, food shortages and a whole host of other problems. These are unlikely to be straightened out by 2020.

They don't have the resources to host a games, or to construct the facilities the games would need.

Not to mention the fact that Ethiopia has the potential to very rapidly dissolve into smaller tribal states and warring factions.

  4. Besides the construction of every venue for sports and the infrastructure to move and accommodate the athletes and spectators, there biggest problem is the weather.

The summer Olympics must be held within a certain time frame and the temperatures are too hot for endurance events.

The IOC would like to award the games to Africa, but I don't think Ethiopia has a chance.

  5. Weather is a part of choosing the host. I would be happy if the Olympics will be held in an African nation someday!

  6. I heard the one track that the runners have has holes in it that need repairing.

The hot climates could be another thing that goes against them

drought and war is another problem in the country.

Some people have left the country as refugees, in fact one Ethiopian man has became an Australian citizen and and competing for Australia in Paralympic power lifting

  7. yea, i think it would be interesting to see the games held in Africa

  8. Yes is my answer as i think with some hard work any country can put on an olympic games but they also need some sponsors and alot of money

  9. Even if they have sponsors to pay for everything I do not think they would be ready to host the games in 2020. In addition to the medical issues and potential civil unrest that others have talked about there are other areas to consider.

The infrastructure of not only Ethiopia but its surrounding countries would have to be revamped. Individuals and teams would probably be flying in from surrounding states (Eritrean, Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, and Djibouti). This would mean more money being poured into airports, train stations, roads, and other transportation means. Somehow I don't see a sponsor for the 2020 Olympics wanting to pay to pave a road in Eritrea. Transportation logistics would be a nightmare that would have to be addressed.

Language skills are a serious issue that would need to be addressed. The majority of individuals speak a Semitic or Cushitic language. They do not speak English or French (the official languages of the Olympics). It would be difficult to teach the large amount of individuals another language by this time. This doesn't even include the numerous other teams and spectators that don't speak English or French well. In larger, more developed cities/countries it is easier to find individuals to use as translators. Someone in Berlin may also speak Italian or someone in Chicago may also speak Japanese... This would be a huge detriment to hosting the Olympic Games in Ethiopia.

The sponsors would have to essentially rebuild Ethiopia in order to host the games. Consider the amount of electricity alone that would be required to host the Olympics. The gyms, pools, training facilities, tracks, not to mention hotel rooms, museums, restaurants, and more. Huge power plants would need to be built (and staffed) in order for this to happen. Water purification plans would also have to be built not only for drinking water, but also pools for swimming, diving, water polo... These are huge amounts of money that would have to be poured into a country.

In addition, one of the things a candidate city must show is the lasting Olympic legacy. I don't know if Ethiopia would be able to do this. The country is considered one of the poorest in the world and while the sponsors would make money would the people of Ethiopia. More realistically would they make enough money to use all the Olympic Facilities that had been built? Also, would people travel to Ethiopia just to see the previous stadiums? When you go to China you go to see the Great Wall, temples and other sites, while you are there you can also see the Birds nest and Water Cube. Would people go just to Ethiopia to see a pool?

I think that having the Olympics in an African nation would be amazing. I just think that the nation should be more developed, richer, and have a better handle on its facilities and health.

Also, most of these arguments that I used are ones that IOC uses when picking a city to become a candidate or Games city.

  10. In the current climate I feel it is pretty risky holding the 2008 Olympics in London!

It amazes me that the country which inspired Live Aid and is still the subject of appeals by Save The Children as it's people are starving would even contemplate hosting the Olympics - although I was also amazed to meet Ethiopian millionaires during their main crisis years. You would think that a country with oil reserves would be able to afford to feed its citizens and the sense to tax these oil millionaires.

According to the CIA website there is currently a Boundary dispute between Ethiopia and it's neighbour Eritrea - the war between the two countries having ended in a peace treaty in late 2000. This war started soon after Ethiopia's long period of civil unrest.

Then think of the world's athletes, I have pasted in below a few of the major health problems of the area; degree of risk: high

food or waterborne diseases: bacterial and protozoal diarrhea, hepatitis A and E, and typhoid fever

    vectorborne diseases: malaria

    respiratory disease: meningococcal meningitis

    animal contact disease: rabies

    water contact disease: schistosomiasis (2008)

(We will hope and assume that the athletes are sensible enough to avoid contracting HIV/AIDS!!)

All in all - NO I think that it would be a very bad idea for the Olympics to go to Ethiopia as soon as 2020.

Mind you I feel it would be 100 times worse to give it to Russia..

Maybe give Ethiopia a few more years to sort out their finances so that they can afford to feed their own populace - after all what use would olympic stadiums be to fill the stomachs of the starving?  And with all those infections diseases the "Sponsors" would be better off using their money to build & fit out a new hospital as well as aiding the clean water projects started off by Live Aid.

School sounds much more interesting these days - good luck with your project...

  11. no i don't think they are worthy enough, on the basis that they cant even feed their own nation, and by giving them the right to host an olympic games would put more burden on their society and the world
