We had our friendliest sheep die yesterday- we hand fed him from a lamb when his mother didnt want to know, he was always trying to get into the car he was so nosey.

He got flystrike - its very hard to see- the only symptoms are lethargy - you only have one day to notice it the next they are dead eaten alive by maggots.

In our case rats and foxes and badgers had a go too and it wasnt pretty.

So next time you think of farmers just think that wheres theres livestock theres deadstock, and were not all hardnosed enough not to shed a tear

  1. It doesn't matter how long you raise livestock, you never really get hardened to loss.  I've taught myself not to get attached to the new arrivals, because there's always that chance that something won't make it, and you're always grateful when they do.

It is SO MUCH harder losing one after you've learned their personality, and moreso when it's a favorite.  I lost my dairy buck suddenly to an aneurism a couple of months ago and cried hysterically over "my boy".  There was (and still is) a big empty spot in the barn and in my daily routine.

Didn't make me feel much better when I posted on Y!A about it and got my question reported (still don't understand that one).  Hope you have an easier go of it.

Sorry to hear about losing your sheep.  If we didn't love what we did, it wouldn't hurt so much, right?  What made me feel better was to focus not on the loss of my buck, but on the beautiful kids he left me with this year.  Get out in the pasture and give the remaining flock some crackers and scratch their ears.  Good luck to you... it'll get easier.

  2. Sorry to hear about your sheep, really sad news.

and no..... I don't think farming of any sort is easy.

  3. im sorry for your loss, but not everybody says that.
