I am a fashion designer, and I have been hit with a stereotype I tried to ignore in all my time of training to be a designer. The stereotype that g**s guys are better fashion designers. I do not see why? It is not true. I am extremely creative, but lately it has been used against me in my career. To tell you the truth I think I am better because I make clothing I know straight guys and myself would like on a woman. I think g*y guys just try to dress women up like barbie dolls and force their ideas of style on them.

  1. Nope, but I do think they're way gayer than us.

  2. I don't think sexual orientation defines a person's level of creativity.  I have seen good work out of both g**s and straights and poor work out of both.

I do think a process called "appropriate symbolic behavior" is something you may be encountering.  Appropriate symbolic behavior is best described as looking like and having the behaviors that match people's expectations of a person in a role or position.  For example, in the movies, Army generals are portrayed as rough and tumble leaders.  You never see an Army general portrayed as a nerd.  If a general came off as a nerd, people would question the general's combat leadership skills without knowledge of the general's actual skills set.

Many people (not all) associate g**s with some industries, fashion design in your case, and when a person doesn't display the appropriate symbolic behavior for their role, the observer questions their abilities.  In other words, "You aren't g*y, are you sure you know what you are doing?"

"Blink" is a very good book the examines how people make snap assessments on people and situations.  The book doesn't use the term appropriate symbolic behavior, but the concept is addressed.  "Blink is also a very fun book to read.

With my theory out of the way, I offer one more thought about your situation.  g*y Mafia.  I don't know if this actually exists, but if it does, it might be at play in you situation.

  3. g*y people are differently more creative. should i make a list for you?

  4. i don't think g*y people are more creative, but i think we are generally more willing to act on that creativity than straight people. g*y people are already ostracized by much of society, so there is less fear that are ideas will be rejected. so g*y people will seem more creative than straight people, even though there is no real difference.

  5. That would lead to the assumption that creative positions are filled by g*y people; not straight people.

That would rule out straight people as artists, photographers, or actors.

That would rule out g*y people as doctors, nurses, engineers, or lawyers.

Oh, BTW, You are presenting the stereotype that g*y guys just try to dress women up like barbie dolls and force their ideas of style on them.  As a straight male, i certainly enjoy ladies dressed up like Barbies.

  6. like u said.. it's a stereotype... doesn't mean it's the same in all cases...

  7. That's not true Some of the greatest designers in the industry are straight. i.e. Calvin Klein, Oscar de la Renta... It's just a dumb stereotype.

  8. Many perverts also smoke POT.  What happens to their minds could be called creative by another sick mind.  Non POT smoking g**s don't lack creativity, they lack morals.
