  1. Methadone is not heroin, I am sure a heroin addict would chose heroin over methadone anyday. Methadone is used to get people off heroin. Thats the way they treat addiction these days, an addict will then become depedentant on methadone, they'll try to gradually reduce the dosages then swap the addict to a less addictive drug (opioid). The cycle goes on and on to eventually with therapy the addict is free of his addictions. It can and does work .

  2. thy should leagalize it on the isle of mann, put all the smack heads there n let em do em till they all die

  3. I think its a bad ideaI the only way to deal with it is when peeps want to deal with it, getting free hand outs isnt going to help.

i have ashtma and i cant get free medication, even though it can be life or death for me if I dont have it and its 18quid every 2 weeks.  I feel its unfair that people with low self will or just no common sense are given a hand out when people in need such as cancer sufferes dont get any help.

I know that coming off drugs is supposed to be rough but it was their choice in the begining to take them.

  4. The worst thing to do is feed sombody the one thing that they are trying to stop.

  5. The reason they give methadone is because it minimizes horrible withdrawal symptoms. Heroin withdrawal can cause life threatening problems. i.e seizures, etc. Methadone is one of the most inexpensive medications that exist and to me, if it will help to ease someone out of addiction by minimizing the withdrawal symptoms til the actual drug is out of their system, it is worth it to have a facility where a person can voluntarily go for help. Programs like these have helped virtually thousands of people kick heroin.

  6. Methadone is a disastrous choice for management of drug addiction. It is both more addictive and causes more fatalities than heroin. Most of the justification for methadone maintenance, the commonest management, ( different from using methadone to withdraw,) is based on some health economic studies of the 1980s which showed that addicts on methadone programs steal less! There are no useful studies which show any real medical advantages.

Such methadone programs that there are in the UK are very poorly run and controlled, with most addicts using the drug as a ' top-up.'

I worked with drug addicts within the Scottish Prison Service, where I was a Prison Medical Officer for 13 years. Universally addicts disliked methadone, but it was often, particularly in recent years the only option offered. Many felt it was the worst of all the managements they had tried.

No longer politically correct, and indeed some addicts are now trying to sue because they were subjected to it, group cold-turkey was the most popular method with addicts themselves.

With regard to prescription heroin, this is used in a number of countries including Switzerland and it was also used in some parts of Germany. It is more successful and less dangerous than methadone. It does however require to be 'sold' to the general public, who often object to it's use.
