  1. Various societies handle the issue differently.  In most societies, honesty is socially fitting - but only certain kinds of honesty and only in certain settings. To the extent that honesty enhances relationships, it is fitting.

Honest people are socially unfit if their honesty causes others to get in trouble (for example, whistle blowers), if they are very different from others or if they are offensive.  Also, unless they are especially smart and hard working, honest people would under-perform dishonest people.

There are some cultures or groups of people who value honesty so much that they respect or honor it even if it causes unpleasantness.

It also depends on the particular honest person.  Honesty can be done with crudeness and that is more likely to be unfitting.  A respectful and graceful honest person is much more likely to be accepted.

  2. No . The statement is not true . Somebody might be pulling your leg . Honesty is the best policy !

  3. Honest does NOT mean they don;t know how to set boundaries. Oft times, however, honesty is seen as weakness, but it is really a strength, because their own self integrity has been fulfilled, and yet, people will use them as emotional doormats unless the honest ones can set those so important boundaries: financial; time, space, etc...

  4. Let's be honest. If someone is totally honest he would not survive in society. In order for someone to be totally honest his audience  would need to be mature enough to accept anything he has to say. How many of us can cliam to be that way? It's definitely not the case for me.

If while trying not to be rude a person lies, he is not being honest. A lie is a lie even if its not a bad thing.

So to answer your question I believe that if a person were totally honest he would be socially unfit, but that doesn't mean

that we're all great hypocrites. We're just not as honest as we could be.

  5. It is said,

"The hardest person to be honest with is ones self."

"We don't see things as they are, we see things as we are."

    and

"We don't see it until we see it."
