  1. No, I do not think it is wrong. It has been going on for thousands of years and will be going on thousands of years after you and I are long gone.

I do think that the improvements in Thoroughbred racing that are being enacted in the individual states where racing is popular are good steps to help these magnificent animals live longer lives and race more safely.  For example, the switch to poly-track surfaces versus dirt is a  great way to prevent injuries from irregularities in the soil caused by rain or drought.  The ban of steroids of is another good step.

These animals are bred to race; that's what they have done for thousands of years.

  2. YES nothing is more cruel that horse racing. Horses are not supposed to run at those speeds and most race horses end up dying very very young. If you saw what happened to eight bells at the kentucky derby and don't think horse racing is wrong then something is wrong with you. So what if she won she's dead now what's the glory in that?

  3. No, Its a sport like any other. Its amazing to watch and has been around for years! Its truley jaw dropping to see a animal with that power and drive run. In a second you litterally go from 0 to 60 mph. It bugs me how Ice Skating Girl just sees Eight Belles tragic death and automatically talkes bad! Do your research! Hundreds of horses race daily with no problem. what happend to eight belles was AFTER her race!! get it straight ice girl! My dad has been racing for over 30 years (trainer / owner) and 2 weeks after i was born i was out on the track watching my horse race. Im 15 now and truley love the sport. But just like any sport it has its risks, its the most dangerous, but the most wonderfull :]

  4. First of all it is not a game of chance! It is a real sport that involves athletes that love what they do. Read this webpage and understand what I understand.

  5. No  It's a sport

  6. No. Horses don't seem to be terribly unhappy out there on the track, and if it were to be made illegal, it would just go on in secret--where people couldn't keep an eye on it. Even worse.

Also, the media only focuses on the tragedies. Most of those horses are pampered to a ridiculous degree while they race. And then they get to go to pasture where they live out the rest of their lives quite happily. I'm not saying that it is all like that, but it is for the most part. Also, believe it or not, horses break their legs in other sports as well. They can trip and fall in the pasture and break their leg! It isn't limited to the track.

As for Eight Belles... she's one horse. Not all the thousands that don't die. They outweigh those that do by miles. It was a tragedy, yes, but I don't think Eight Belles would have been happy if she'd stayed in a pasture her whole life.. She was an amazing runner, and she was just the victim of a tragic misfortune. You watch her Derby up to the end and tell me again that she didn't want to be running. She ran her heart out because she loved to run.

So, no. I don't think it's cruel or wrong. It is a long-lived tradition, and the day it dies is not anytime soon.

Edit: wifiyah, you are comparing Horse Racing to slavery and racism?? I think that that is incredibly ignorant. Thoroughbreds are bred to race. It's in their blood, and many of them seem to love it. Big Brown and Curlin certainly don't  look miserable out there. And if you need more proof, just check out Secretariat's Belmont. He tore up the track without ever being told to.

Edit #2: I don't, however, support the use of steroids and other drugs. Just let 'em run the way they are supposed to: naturally.

  7. It is a game of chance that if you bet on any horse, it may make you win some and lose greatly.

If it becomes a habit that you have to BORROW with the hope that you can pay  it back if you win, BEG if nobody want s to lend or STEAL if you cannot have get money from the first two schemes and worst KILL to rob someone so you can have something to bet for. That is where it becomes wrong.

  8. I believe that racing is a sport which needs to be improved, changed, and made more humane- NOT BANNED OUTRIGHT, which is what PETA and groups like it are advocating. Racing is a MULTI-BILLION dollar industry which employs MILLIONS of people, both nationally and at tracks and farms around the globe. There is simply too much money involved, and far too many lives at stake, for a ban to ever be totally effective- something which people who are PETA members can't understand.

Comparing the sport of horse racing to slavery is just ridiculous- there is no basis for this. I agree that the sport does have a dark side- but then again, so does EVERY activity which people participate in. In this world, it's becoming dangerous for people to take a deep breath, never mind try to ride a horse in a race.

  9. Horses were bred to run, and they love it, well most do.

And maybe thats in America, here in Australia some of our best horses are old. Takeover Target is at his best at 8 and nine, Fields Of Omagh won the Cox Plate when he 8, Super Impose also won the Cox Plate when he was 8, Makybe Diva was 7 when she was at her best winning The Australian Cup, the B M W, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup. And Sunline was 7 when she ended her career. Then theres Bomber Bill, St Basil and Omnitrader that were/are 10 when they finished, just to name a few.

  10. not at all.  these horses were bred for racing and being there at the track, listening to the pounding hoofs coming around the final turn...nothing beats it.

  11. It is wrong and there no need for a debate or to question this. Just as slavery was wrong. just as racism is wrong. just as Zoos are wrong and many other things practice by humans towards any living thing is wrong!

  12. Here again this question crops up and here again, is my standard answer.  For those that have read this before...sorry, but I have this one saved up so that I don't have to retype it.

Horse Racing: The Good, the Bad and as long as we're pointing fingers...

Though not all race horses are well treated, most in the United States and other major countries are. This is a billion dollar a year industry, there are rules in place to protect the animals. Most whips, and this might be all, not sure on whether this rule is official yet, have a foam core, they make a lot of noise, but offer little to no pain, sort of like whacking yourself with a wiffleball bat. Not all thoroughbreds are worth millions, but even the lowest level of claimers are loved by someone. Leaving out the bad apples that pop up in every sport, most trainers, grooms, exercise riders, jockeys, etc. treat the animals well, that is not to say they never whip or slap the horses, but most of these animals weigh in excess of 1,000 lbs of the people handling them......if you aren't the boss, you're in the dirt. To be honest the thoroughbred industry has more rules and is better at enforcing those rules than ANY other equine sport. It sounds horrible, but accidents happen, the recent tragic events in racing are heartbreaking, but it is NO REASON to condemn the industry, accidents are just that, accidents...if you don't understand the term, look it up in the dictionary.

These animals are bred to run, they love to run, if they don't love it, then they don't make it to the track, if you ever doubt that thoroughbreds love to run, visit your local thoroughbred nursery and watch yearlings race each other in the pasture, or if you ever get the chance to ride a thoroughbred and have the experience to do so, give them their head and marvel in the feel of a powerful animal in flight. You don't need to give them anything to make them go faster, it is in fact illegal in thoroughbred racing; they simply want to go faster, it is as natural for them as breathing.

Yes, many thoroughbreds are slaughtered every year, but every other equine sport is as much to blame as horse racing, breeding hundreds of thousands of horses each year solely for profit means that hundreds of thousands of horses need homes. If we didn't slaughter, or ship horses to be slaughtered we would end up with millions of feral horses roaming the United States, unfortunate as it is, this is a necessary part of the industry.. The SPCA is forced to put down millions of dogs and cats every year, but no one seems to give a d**n when they do it, yet a slaughter plant does it and everyone is up in arms....explain that one to me, both methods are considered HUMANE forms of death.

Racing thoroughbreds young, training and breaking them young provides valuable loading to the bones and joints that actually REDUCES the number of injuries associated with horse racing. Look at broad facts, 100 years ago horses raced more often, over more years, now we race them less and many thoroughbreds are retired by 3 years old...often due to INJURY.

PLEASE don't judge horse racing until you have spent time within the industry. 'Only once you have walked a mile in another man's shoes may you judge him.' Don't remember who said it, but it's true. I may not agree with everything that happens in horse racing, but I love the sport, I love the animals, and I love...well, most of the people I've met.
