Question:

Do you think it's a problem if you can see your bed from your kitchen sink!??

Here's the deal....

I am looking at a house to buy and the ONLY problem - and it is a major one to me - is that the master bedroom is right off the kitchen!

I don't get it! This is a lovely home - very spacious & nice. In the country with three acres, and a pool & stuff.

But there are French doors off of the kitchen leading into the master bedroom!

Like we're just gonna get desperate for a grilled cheese at 3:00 am & don't wanna hafta walk too far to the stove?

My husband thinks I'm being picky... But I think it would be really embarassing when we have our Christmas party if our guests can see our bed while they are grabbing an appetizer in the kitchen!

Mind you - I always have my bed made & keep my house VERY clean. I still think the bedrooms should be separate from the rest of the house.

I mean, didn't Alice have her bedroom right off the kitchen in the Brady Bunch?

  1. Take out the door to kitchen and wall it over, and put the door in a wall that goes into another room

  2. Maybe you can put a retractable curtain over the French doors. We used to have vertical blinds over our French doors in our old house. It gave us the option to open up the living room to den when we are entertaining or to close it up when we want some privacy.

Look at the bright side, you can relax in your bed reading a book and still be able to keep on eye on what you're baking in the kitchen :)

With 3 acres of country and a pool, I don't think the bedroom location should be a deal breaker.

    Good luck :)

  3. I can see where that would be off-putting at first glance. However, given today's housing market, if it's a price that's reasonable to you, I'd say go for it. If the price is a bit high, tell the seller that you're unhappy about the bedroom set-up, and see if they'd accept a lower bid. If this is something they've heard before, they may decide it's not worth it to hold out at the higher price.

It's possible that having a bedroom next to the kitchen could yield uses you hadn't thought of prior to living there. It will make for a short traipse to breakfast. You'd be able to rest without neglecting cooking food. I'm sure you'd discover other small benefits as you lived there.

The next part is that you could pretty easily change the way the doors are. Cheap and easy solutions include curtains, blinds, or something else hung to cover the glass of the door. Home Depot also sells prefabricated/pre-painted doors in a number of different standard sizes. They aren't horribly expensive and if you or a family member was even slightly handy, a swap-out would be very simple.
