On one hand, women who are smart, are easy to get along with, and are great communicators will be ignored if they're physically unattractive. Yet, her male counterpart isn't limited by his looks alone, and can get more physically attractive women, in spite of his appearance, because of his other traits - or, that's how the theory goes.
Yet, on the other hand, in history could get go up in the social ladder based on looks alone. Society is more willing to accept a woman's other short-comings if she's very pretty.
Currently, in Western society a woman isn't expected to only be pretty and nothing about her matters. Women can do more in life than just looking pretty and taking care of their children. They are also able to pursue the careers of their choice.
Yet, most people still expect men to support the family financially and not too many handsome men want to date ugly girls. Or, at least that's the stereotype.
