To serve women and their children, inform them of all their options, not just the ones the law requires. Give support weather they decide to parent or place and counceling for adoptees placed throught them.

The agency could charge actual costs and a little more to stock up a supply room of baby stuff for women who decide to parent. It could be on a volunteer basis and PAPs are not involved in the counceling. (I know that 5 of the 7 women who worked at our agency were also matched at the agency). There can be a you call us policy and matches are made after birth. OH EVEN better yet there could be a suite where the mother and her baby can go for a few day or weeks after the hospital stay to think about things.(that is assuming the employees are non bias and supportive no matter what)

Do you think anyone out there has the heart to start this kind service? With all thats wrong is it possible to just do what's right? What do you think would be the makings of an honest, rightous agency

  1. I think it's entirely possible.  I think this kind of unbiased approach should be mandatory to all agencies (huge sigh)

Looking back on what Florence Crittendon started out as, I agree with the last answerer, that she would be turning in her grave to see what her organization has become today!

  2. Many current adoption agencies like Crittenton initially opened for exactly that purpose to encourage mothers to parent and relinquishment as a last resort.  They even provided mothers with "scholarships" and parenting classes to help them in their endeavors.

That all ended in the sixties and seventies with the advent of the pill and the fact that the agencies realized they could turn quite a profit in adoption.  It's very sad.  Florence Crittenton is probably rolling in her grave right now.

So no.  I don't think this is a pipe dream at all.

  3. It would be nice but that won't happen.  Not when there is a profit to be made.

  4. Oh - it's a wonderful pipe-dream Florida Gal.

If only you could find a financial backer to do this.

Sadly too many want to make money out of babies.

    We can dream - right?

    Great question.

Edit - no probs FG - all good!

  5. Anything can be done if you put your mind to it and have the money of course.

  6. I've often wondered the same thing. Maybe an organization that already exists and already shares those goals could start taking on additional services. For example, what if some group like "Origins-USA" began filling the role that a for-profit agency would normally fill? Such a group could potentially serve as an alternative to the adoption industry, and they could then see to it that everything is handled ethically from the beginning.

It might be more plausible than starting an agency from scratch.

  7. An agency to truly look out for the very best interests of children and parents -- what a great thought.  I'd like to think it could happen.  I can't imagine there wouldn't be women who would want these services.

  8. My husband and I support a church run program that has residential care for young women and their children and abused children.  They provide parenting classes, job training, GED, day care, and health care.  It is NOT an agency.  The director would chuck bricks at anyone who suggested that it is an adoption agency.  They only refer children for adoption as a last resort.  It is extremely rare for an infant to be adopted.  Stranger adoptions are highly discouraged.

The people who work there (many of us volunteer their time) do not get rich tho'.

In my opinion, just calling an organization an adoption agency is coercive because the name implies that the intent is adoption.

  9. They might start of like that but the good old love for the dollar will come around. What I would like to see is true counseling in adoption not just tell the father's "Look either sign the child off or your be paying for 18 years" or " this child most likely isn't yours" But you never hear them say : Sir if you really want your child here is the steps you have to take" But be prepared to pay alot of illegal expense because we are going to drag this on for years we need another baby SAM. richard, jessica case. OH By the way you need to pay all expece for the baby's medical our adoptiong couple don't and we don't but you better.
