Do you think it's right for a compulsive gambler to sue a casino?

Ok, so this morning I read a news article which angered me so much I had to ask other people's views on it. The story was of an accomplished lawyer who ended up having an addiction to gambling. She gambled close to 1 million dollars and lost her car, home, job, friends, life, all because of it.

The absurd part is that she has the gall to come up with the bright idea of sueing 6 of the casinos she frequented for a total of $20,000,000, stating in her claim that it was the casino's responsibility to make her aware of her addiction or to not provide service to her after a while.

I personally don't think it's the casino's responsibility. People should take responsibility for their own actions. Plus, if the casino WERE to stop her from gambling, that would open up a whole new can of worms, because then, she's gonna want to sue because the casino dicriminated against her or some BS.

This news story really ticked my off, and I just want to know what other people think about this situation.

  1. Do you know if the lawyer put herself on the list that casino's have to be barred from playing?  If so, then the casino does bear some responsibility for not following its own rules.

  2. It really boils down to your social views.

If you want to raise wussies who have no sense of personal responsibility then yes you can sue.

If you do have a sense of personal responsibility then no you can't.

I'm overweight. Should I sue the places I eat becasue they don't tell me that if I eat 4 Whoppers a day I will get fat?

Lawyers like this give the profession a rank odor.

  3. I nearly plotzed when I read the story as well - the woman embezzeled funds from her clients to support her gambling (and got disbarred for it) and SHE's the victim? Just another sad instance of how people today don't take responsibility for their actions...why fess up that you're to blame when you can sue someone with deep pockets?

  4. of course not,the law is an ***

  5. It is the stated mission of casinos to rob us blind! The House always wins. Anyone as educated as a lawyer knows that. This is a frivilous lawsuit, and the plaintiff should be required to pay the expenses of the casino!

  6. Since she is a lawyer, she must think she has a legal leg to stand on but I agree with you...if the casino stopped her she would sue for discrimination. It is a no win situation again. She is probably hoping to get sympathy from the jury but either way, she is gaining notoriety so she wins no matter what the outcome of the case. Stinks, but when you know the ins and outs, you have an advantage over the rest of us little peons...sigh.
