Do you think it's rude that the American gold medalists don't sing the National Anthem?

So, they got that far to the Olympics, do you think that it would kill them to learn the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner?

Why do you suppose that athletes from other countries sing along to their anthems, but the vast majority of American athletes do not do the same for ours? Do you suppose the lyrics are too difficult? Are they just self-conscious?

  1. You'd be surprised at how many people don't know the words to the National Anthem.

Of those that do, they may be so wrapped up in the moments that they forgot the words.  I know I'd lip-sync though.  (I'm probably a good singer, but I'm shy too.) :)

  2. So, you have seen every single American Gold Medal win??? They also could be a tad tired.

  3. It's not rude, honestly that's probably the last thing on their mind. I mean they just won a gold medal at that point they're probably too emotional to even think of the words, but I'm sure they know them. At least they show respect by putting their right hand over their heart (it's still patriotism)

  4. No, I completely agree with what you are saying, and I know what ya mean! They may not be proffessional singers, but what harm will it do to sing along with the anthem?? I've noticed some athletes that look like their not even paying attention to it, and that's sad, because without their country backing them up, where would they be? Jeez...

  5. I think it is better to memorize it and practice it at home first. Even I memorized my country's National Anthem at home when I was young. But otherwise it's OK if you can't memorize as long as you hear it and make a salute, it's considered as a respect.

  6. The person who wrote the national anthem didn't make it particularly easy to sing. It has a huge range of notes, and many people are unable to hit them all. Even professional singers get nervous singing the national anthem in public, and some have made mistakes.

Because it is so difficult to sing, most people don't hear it that often, and sing it even less often. Many Americans don't know the words to the first verse and the vast majority don't know the subsequent verses.

The last line is the most recognizable, which is probably why they start singing it then.

  7. The true question is how many Americans actually know all the words... You'd be surprised... I know that right after I exert myself in an exercise I can't think straight. Maybe they would rather not move their lips than mess up on international television.

  8. No.  I do think, however, that it is rude not to know the proper etiquette concerning the National Anthem AND criticize people who follow the proper etiquette.

The proper etiquette, as codified in the U.S. Code, for Americans when the American National Anthem is playing is to stand and either salute (if in uniform) or place the right hand over the heart.  Some people sing along but that is NOT required.  You are supposed to stand quietly and respectfully.

  9. Well there not singer's , If that was the case they wouldn't be gold medalists
