Question:

Do you think it's weird for a girl to like metal?

I've been going on these metal forums the past few days,

and the majority of people on them are guys.

In fact, I've only seen ONE other girl on them.

Anyways, I've met some nice guys on it

but a lot of them seem to say things like,

"What do you know about metal? You're a girl."

So I'll say, "Can't a girl like metal?"

And their response is usually something like,

"Yeah, but not ones that look like you."

When I ask them to go into further detail regarding that statement,

they say things like, "You wear too much makeup, you're blonde, and you're really pretty..."

(I don't know whether to be flattered or offended by that last one.)

But, it just makes me wonder: if you're a girl who likes metal, do you have to look like a man or something?

And then if you don't, you are automatically labeled, "Poser" ??

Just so you can have a visual, here's a pic of me.

Now my questions:

1.) Do you TRULY think a girl can like and have an extensive knowledge of metal, as much as a guy could?

2.) Do you think there are several stereotypes within the metal community? (ex: guys must have long hair, girls cannot look girly, etc?)

  1. That's an interesting question. I have asked a similar question so I could give you the link of mine. I also think that there are way too much stereotypes, not only in metal, but in general. Pop people are girly little girls with makeup, metal are boys with long hair and black clothes and goth girls who want to kill themselves... So much stereotypes... I am a boy who listens to metal and I have neither long hair, nor black clothes, nor anything else saying I'm a metalhead. But I can still enjoy the music...

  2. You're right, I listen to metal, my GUY friends ask me: Who is the guitarist in.....? Why do u listen to metal? How many genres in metal?(this Q. really annoys me, i mean who the h**l counts, i lsn to what i like!!)  So, i'm now officially wearing Skull necklaces, bracelets, anklets, hairbands and belts(yup, i have one h**l of a collection) and ofcourse, sometimes a shirt with a bands name, i wear alot of make-up, that day a friend of mine, a guy took my cellphone and saw my MP and said "Gorgoroth, i didnt know you're good" it kinda ticked me off.

about ur Q.: 1-If u really studied the bands formation, past members and current members and somehow memorize them all, then u go girl!

2-Most of the boys i know dont have long hair, just 3 of them, girls, umm No, i look girly as h**l, i wear makeup, colors(except when i'm at a concert with the Band's black shirt, which is rare, like once only, lmao!!)

  3. It doesn't matter what you look like...

  4. Heck, no, there's a lot of metalhead-ettes! I know quite a few, myself.

I don't think it matters whether you're a dude, a girl, or whatever Michael Jackson is, just like what you like, who cares about the stereotypes?

Oh, yeah, I added you on Myspace! =D

  5. Music is music. I know a lot of girl who like metal. Some are in metal bands.

Well there are always going to be people who will stereotype you. No matter the kind of music you listen to. Those people are just jack*****. There is no problem listening to metal and not dressing what you listen to.

  6. I am an even better example for this.....I am a 17 year old girl who loves metal....yet if you saw me, you'd never guess it....I'm tall, curly brown hair, I dress girly.....I get people coming up to me all the time telling me I should be a model and people are always surprised by my taste in music..not trying to sound arrogant, I am just trying to paint a picture.....anyways, I am a dedicated metal fan...its all I listen to and I have my own individual taste....a lot of the guys on here know about me and know I know my fair share about metal bands....honestly, your question is just drawing more negative attention to yourself....instead of posting this, post some awesome questions having to do with metal....show everyone your taste and that your not a "poser" and gain people's respect....you just have to realize people stereotype and usually judge people by their appearance....I am the perfect example of "don't judge a book by its cover" cause I am a well rounded person and people are always surprised by me......so, Good luck girl :)

Honestly, if metal music is so important to you, you shouldn't have to post questions like this cause you wouldn't care what others think....

Edit: Roxel, thanks for the recognition...lol

    :)

  7. Who cares? Like what ya like.

....but maybe it's cause ya look like one of those scene posers

  8. theres nothing wrong for a chick to like metal

  9. No that's cool that you like metal!

I wouldn't consider you a poser unless you like nu metal and deathcore and c**p like that and call yourself a "metalhead"

Oh and, hate to say it but... you're wearing a little too much makeup!

    \m/

  10. 1.) lmao of course a girl can like metal. I like metal... and I don't think that I look like a man. xD (At least... I hope not.)

2.) Of course there are stereotypes. There are ALWAYS stereotypes. That doesn't make them true.

  11. why couldn't girls like metal, it's the best for of music there is. if someone else has a problem with it then s***w them.

  12. 1. i dont know, i guess so, i know a lot about metal

    2. ya, i have long hair, tight pants, and band t-shirts that i wear everyday, i dress like that cus i like that style. i go to a christian school with about 180 kids in my 8th grade class right now and they all are rich preps that like the g*y rap, pop, and g*y rock from today. only me and 1 other person are true fans of rock and metal and actually dress that way so just be yourself and dont care wut all the g*y, f*g, prep people say about u

  13. h**l no.  Yes, wow them with your knowledge. I grew up in the hairband 80s. I would think you would need to have long hair, but them again, so many have cut their hair, so nope. Have you seen pics of Lita Ford or      ? Rock on     !!!

  14. i think it's extremely odd if they do. extremely.

  15. HAHAHA That guys a total dumbass...

Thats like saying, just cause you wear a certain shirt you cant POSSIBLY like this music ;) Im asian, a girl, people see me as either a geek or a priss... but i LOVE rap, hip hop, hard rock... In fact, im a rocker lol.

Tell him to "f" off, just cause you like music, whats it to him? Is he jealous that you look so good? ;)

Nothin wrong with a girl likin metal. Dont worry, youre fine ^_^

  16. Who gives a d**n about that?

Anyone can listen to what they want, regardless of appearance.  Guys that go on forums and act like that aren't people you need to argue with anyway.

  17. 1.) h**l ya, I do!

2.) and yes there are...some like me have that rock chick look...others are girly...lots of styles

and I know it does seem like there aren't many....especially at school...or around ya...

  18. Yes you can like metal and know as much about it , if not more than some guys,,,so you should never let that bother you, i have loved metal for a long time, im a female and i have grandkids , so everyone can enjoy the music.... metal rules....

  19. h**l No!!!, I'm a Hair Metal freak and I love it!!!!

  20. Appearance isnt everything trust me

  21. Don't even care about what people think of you, you'll ruin yourself!

  22. I think guys take any chance they can get to be sexist and stereotypical and now they're just taking this one out on you. Metal is awesome and appeals to lots of different types of people, including pretty blond girls. However, Must girls do tend to listen to different types of music or are afraid to be persecuted if they do let people know that they like metal. I don't think you should let these guys get to you, you don't listen to metal to please or displease them, hopefully you do it for you, and your enjoyment. And if that's true it shouldn't matter whether or not people think your a poser, would you want to listen to the Jonas Brothers just to seem feminine. Katherine Hepburn wore pants in the fifties and forties and is an example of feminine beauty, I don't think Priest, or Slipknot coming out of your ipod headphones should make you seem masculine

  23. Go to a metal concert when you get the chance.  You will be SURROUNDED by other girls just like yourself who love their metal.  You are not alone.  I'm g*y but there's nothing more fun than watching all the 'metal girls' take their shirts off and rock out just as hard as the guys standing next to them.  So let yourself go and listen to what you want!  Go to some shows and have FUN (shirts optional...lol)  :)

  24. There's a whole lot of Metal-Loving girls here in R&P.

    You're not alone.

  25. You kidding, right? It's 2008. Women are IN metal bands now, let alone listening to it.

  26. girls that like metal hah?

    pretty hot

  27. Yeah, there are stereotypes. But, it doesn't mean you have to follow them. Your s*x or appearance doesn't matter. It is a style of music. Music is universal.

By the way, I'm a girl, and I like metal. I wouldn't call myself a total Metalhead, but I like metal all the same. Anyway, I don't look manish, at least, I don't think so.. I'm not all butch and over-buff and junk with a deep voice.

  28. i know alot of girls who like metal! its ausome!

  29. Why not? Your appearance doesn't matter either. Name some metal bands you like

  30. Um...let me just tell you who I have met on this site who is a metalhead and a girl.  Here are the following users...

    Stabbing The Drama

    Beyond The Shadows

    Ana Maria

    Jackie

    Raven

    Vicky (somewhat metalhead)

    Envy Rots The Bones

    MZC

    Dive Into A Holy River

    FAIL

You are not alone lol.  There is probably more girls that I have met out there that I just can't think of at the moment who listen to metal music.

To answer your other question, I myself am I guy who listens to a lot of metal music.  In fact, I am Christian male, 18 years old in high school who is very shy in class.  Nobody would guess that I listen to metal.  As a matter of fact, that isn't all that I listen to either.  I listen to other forms of music such as classical, jazz, some rap, and even americana.  How many metalheads would tell people that? lol

EDIT: You're welcome Stabbing The Drama.
